Hi all,
My friend said in one of his newsletters that a good way to detoxify yourself is to fast and not eat for a week and drink only liquids. People who do that will clean out their system and look healthier and younger, he says. Others have told me about this before too.

Is this a good idea? I don't know if I could only drink liquids for a week though. That sounds kind of extreme.

How do you get nutrition during that time? By drinking juice, protein shakes, etc.?

Anyone have experience with this?

I fast one day a week for a 24 hour period, from dinner one night to dinner the next. I think it is a great way to reduce overall calorie consumption as well as give the body a rest from digestion.
When fasting drink only water, I also drink a little coffee for energy as it has almost zero calories.

I don't know what kind of fasting your talking about but when we muslims fast, we fast from sunrise to sunset. We do not eat or drink, and sexual intercourse isn't allowed during that time either. It has been proven that it can detoxify your body. It's also good to remember what the poor & others are going through

Fasting can be effective but it is also important to maintain drainage and activate your organs of elimination (liver, kidneys, skin, lungs, colon, lymphatic system) at the very least it is best to have water to flush toxins during a fast. I have found The Master Cleanse to be very effective for detox although there are many others as well.

funny you ask...im in the middle of a fast as we speak.
IT is something i do from time to time when i feel my body is asking for it.
The body can sustain itself for a while without food and specific nutrients, but is essential to any long term fasting, i also drink small amounts of coffee when i fast, no cream or sugar.
The first few days are always the hardest, the stomach pains and the nausea can be a tempting reason to fold but its worth it if you dont.
About the third day everytime (the point i am at now) i notice that i begin to sleep less and still have energy, if not more, than i normally would, but by the end of the week i find my stength draining and i do become more tired. that is usually the point i decide to start eating again.
Dont ever end a long fast with a huge meal full of carbs and protiens.
I will only eat fresh and organic foods (no animal product, flesh, milk or otherwise) for the next week or two and then i will slowly begin to introduce animal protiens, poultry and fish are good starts.
Once you start on the carbs and heavy protiens you will feel a change again, this is what i beleive is my body reverting to old food addictions once again.
This time i have decided not to reintroduce carbs and heavy protiens, i am only going to eat frsh fruit vegies, fish and poultry, mabe some dairy every now and then

just my perspective, good luck to ya and good health

This is worth reading... naturalhygienesociety.org...

It should be noted that the replacement of muscle protein requires time and appropriate exercise. If one over-eats while breaking the fast, they can quickly regain their former weight as fat without completely replacing the lost muscle. (For every 10kg (22 lb.) of weight lost and regained, there results in 10% or 1 kg (2.2 lb.) less protein tissue. If a person goes on three weight loss programs per year during which 10 kg (22 lb.) is lost and regained each time, that would, theoretically, result in the body composition containing 6 kg (13.2 lb.) less protein tissue (mainly muscle) in two years. This calculation would be modified by diet and exercise habits.)
This has important connotations to persons fasting to lose weight or those doing frequent short fasts, such as one day a week.

I've fasted plenty of times since I learned about the health benefits of it. Just did a 7 day water fast last month.

My favorite site for fasting info is: www.fitnessthroughfasting.com...
