A Victory for dogs everywhere - Unhealthy dogs barred from competing in Crufts

I'm sorry I wasn't able to edit my post. I want to clarify I'm not anti AKC in a broad sweeping sense. I have known highly ethical breeders who love their dogs as dogs and not just trophy animals. They do everything in their power to promote healthy standards and breed strong individuals. But the environment is not always conducive to nurturing their efforts.

Name and shame thats what I say

As I mentioned in an earlier post Im a Basset Hound owner, one of the breeds that is on the KC list and which incidently didnt get through tho the group final after been seen by an independant vet.

Im happy to point out that some of e bassets out there are massivley overbred and riddled with health and this needs to be sorted out.

Ethical breeder: one who breeds dogs once all homeless dogs have been adopted
Unethical breeder: one who breeds dogs regardless of the current pet population because wake up, this ain't about the dogs...

Dog breeders are no better than bankers - they both cause suffering in order to make money.

The problem about a complete moratorium on breeding dogs until all dogs are adopted is that we will lose breeds worth preserving that are part of our legacy of the long human-canine partnership. For example the greyhound breed goes back to Biblical times. I'd hate to see this magnificent breed die out. The racing varieties are still structurally sound overall and long lived for dogs of large size, though I hear they are prone to bone cancer for some reason.

A lot of dogs up for adoption are produced irresponsibly in a variety of ways for a variety of reasons. The attack on the problem of unsound and unwanted dogs needs to be two pronged....continue to promote spay and neuter programs to pet owners and discourage "back yard breeding" for a quick buck and crack down on puppy mills. The other prong is to put pressure on AKC breeders to put health and sound structure ahead of extremes and skewed aesthetic sensibilities.
