A Michigan physicians group became the latest group to request the elimination of a controversial panel that will be asked to curb Medicare spending as part of sweeping health care reforms to take effect in 2014.

The Michigan Osteopathic Association, a group with nearly 5,000 member physicians, sent a formal letter to Michigan's congressional delegation urging them to push legislation to repeal the Independent Payment Advisory Board, comprised of 15 health care experts appointed by President Barack Obama, who will have the authority to cut public spending for the elderly if costs exceed the law's limits.

The U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee on Tuesday voted to approve House Resolution 452, a measure to repeal the provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act related to the advisory board, which some critics such as 2008 GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin have dubbed "death panel."

The White House has argued that the panel would help to rein in spending by tackling Medicare fraud and excessive spending.
