Rise of the Pitchforkers Can a group of protesters waving farm implements bring about new rules for pesticide use?

It was a typical morning when the helicopter flew by. Neila Owen was milking the goats and tending to her garden in the Coastal Range of Oregon when it passed. She watched the herbicide that trailed it form a cloud on a hill above her home, then drift slowly across the valley. Within hours, a heavy feeling gripped her muscles, then settled into her joints. Vomiting followed arthritic aches. Her menstrual cycle arrived five days early, she says, with pelvic pain that felt like bones splitting. Later, the farm’s fruit trees stood dead in the yard.

This is the reality of living in logging country of the PNW . Agent Orange analogues drifting through your home, your animals, you and your children. My brother is permanently harmed as is his family as he was one of the first to raise the warning in '99 after heart attacks struck his 10 yr old, 21 yr old and him in a few weeks after being drenched with over spray while standing their yard. He worked his life hard since 15 ys old put himself thru school and worked for his little farm only to be forced out by health issues and no recourse or even community support at the time. Now since the Dr out there has retired folks aren't being told "flu" for everything any more , the # is hitting the fan. Sad as it once was our families gathering spot and holiday central point. I think this has hurt my little brother the most. That and he will never recover the financial loss of his farm investment. His health is such I am lucky he is with me still.

ETA could've gone fragile earth forum but this is more like chemical warfare against an inconvenient population who's private parcels break up the complete monopoly of large contiguous tracts that no care need be taken at all on wholesale spraying by air tanker. This is the same kind of crap we did to the Cong during Viet Nam.

S&F
i assume none of these poor folk
have access to weapons that could take down a helicopter?

going to court is a waste of time in a case like this
they just need to wait for you to drop dead

Woah.. advocating shooting down a helicopter online?

eco-terrorism doesn't work.. it turns people against you. They've done it in the past, attack logging trucks, equipment, even helicopters (while they were on the ground of course..)

Didn't work.

One thing I didn't get about the OP's articles.. are these flying pesticides being used for commercial farming or logging? (I don't understand why they would need an agent orange like pesticide for logging?) But as for the story as a whole, there should be severe financial litigation against anyone who's pesticides "drift" onto someone elses private property. Which would hopefully be a deterrent to restrict the usage of pesticides.

Brazilian loggers 'tied eight-year-old Amazonian tribe girl to a tree and burned her alive'

By Matt Roper
UPDATED: 17:13 GMT, 8 January 2012

Loggers in Brazil who had illegally entered an Amazon Indian reserve captured an eight-year-old indigenous girl and burned her alive, it was claimed today.

The child, who belonged to the isolated Gwaja-Awa tribe, is believed to have wandered away from her village to play and got lost in the forest.

The group of illegal loggers who were trespassing in the 1000-acre reserve in Maranhao state, northern Brazil, came across the young girl, tied her to a tree and set fire to her, it is claimed.
Luis Carlos Guajajaras, a local Indian leader from another tribe protected by the reserve, told Brazil's Terra website that members of his community had witnessed the horrific murder.

He said the white loggers had been illegally paying Indians from his tribe, the Guajajara, to let them pull down trees using heavy machinery and chains when the lost child appeared.

He said: 'It happened deep in the forest. The loggers were doing business with the Guajajara Indians and found the Gwaja girl. And they burned the child. Just because they wanted to, out of nothing but pure wickedness.

'She was from another tribe, they live deep in the jungle, and have no contact with the outside world. It would have been the first time she had ever seen white men. We heard that they laughed as they burned her to death.'

Today the Indigenous Missionary Council confirmed reports of the murder, which is believed to have happened in October or November.

The group, which is linked to the Catholic Church, claim to be in possession of a video of the child's charred body, filmed by members of the Guajajara tribe.

Once a unit is cut it is sprayed heavily to kill all broadleaves like maple and alder that can outgrow Doug fir and wreck the monocrop "forest" they are growing. They also use rodent killer on new plantings and other hormonal agent to prevent seeds from sprouting. This is a soup much more complex but at it's core no different than Agent Orange and no less and possibly much worse a danger to any sort of life.

An update for any interested
"A public health investigation near Triangle Lake, Ore., now involves three federal agencies and the state. It is the first to probe how Americans like Owen, who live in the low-lying areas between patchworks of timberland, fare amid frequent sprays of herbicides. If the study finds evidence that these chemicals are finding their way into people’s bodies there, it could lead to new rules on spraying at the state level and feed into a national inquiry on the matter."
