"A gallery with no sculptures, only a cloud floating within the space. 'Nimbus' is a new installation of Amsterdam-based artist Berndnaut Smilde, who refuses to explain how he managed to create a real cloud."

Wow...I think this is awesome. I appreciate all kinds of art, and especially new forms of expression, this piece is awesome. The guy made a cloud, tells nobody how to do it and it looks crazy.

Just read link and Bam it is not a new idea for I recall Leonardo Da Vinci used to entertain the court by doing similar things such as creating different coloured vapours that hung in the air at different levels

But it's art.

Dammit, people pay thousands just to see an unmade bed covered in clothes and used condoms.

I might try and become an artist, I could become a millionaire finally by doing pretty much nothing.

Sorry to be the Philistine here but this is one of the most ridiculous and pointless "Modern Art" pieces I've ever seen in my life. I bet at least a few people will be disappointed after paying to go and see this. I've lived here 20 years and never wasted my money on Van Gogh or any of the other state owned stuff they might have in Amsterdam.

It looks to me like someone has been fleeced...

If the cloud produced rain i would be amazed.

But a little bit cool anyway, if it's not just a cotton cloud.

And then the fleece hung up in an empty room.

Clearly.

Is it art or a magicians trick
Or perhaps both.

I call it the work of the devil because I can't explain it.

That's what I'd have said 600 years ago anyway.

I think his point here is that the art is the environment - here you can walk in to the art from inside where the blue walls function as the horizon and become the frame of the painting if you will.
Pretty amazing in a way, I could see how it would look f rom in the room where the walls appear infinite and the cloud while the softest thing in the room becomes the most "real" object. The cloud is strikingly lit which gives it extra intensity and dimension.
In person I'm sure it conveys a wonderful interplay of texture, light and sense of space.
That's good art.

Yes in a way art can or attempts to show an appreciation of nature
Say in landscapes or a vase of flowers
Yet these things exist for real in the outside world - So does it not show that sometimes looking at a painting for example can help us appreciate the real thing be it flower face building landscape

Yes 600 years ago the artist might have been burnt at the stake also

And yet burning him at the stake would have the art critics applauding him for such a fantastic piece on the futility of agony or something.
