What's up with all the funny coloured rivers these days ?

Walkers in Göttingen, Lower Saxony, stop to look at a luminous green stream. After a fire in a nearby warehouse, chemicals were released and entered the groundwater nearby. According to the police, the chemicals do not pose a threat.

Kinda what I was thinking. And as for the artist that dyes the streams, how does he know its safe. Do we not dump enough crap in our water as it is. Everyone always says oh its safe, its not poisonious, no cancer causing agents here. Well pure clean water is safe to but hold your head under it long enough and see how that works out for you.

According to this article the substance in the river Grone is uranine, also known as D&C Yellow no. 8.

Uranine does not develop poisonous vapors and is relatively harmless. It is for example used to dye bubble baths. Swallowing large amounts can cause anaphylactoid reactions and cardiac arrest but no one will swallow green colored river water. The EPA has forbidden this practice, but I was unable to find how uranine is harmful to the environment.

No one will swallow green coloured water... except the fish and birds perhaps! These idiots putting this garbage in the water should be forced to clean the gills of every fish and give ant-acids to the birds who eat the fish who now have sore tummy's. Yes, I said tummy, this happens when one becomes a parent

Actually I think the chemical might be flouresceine and it is indeed rather harmless.

I had a chemistry set when I was a kid where you could make that stuff.

How is it weird?
It clearly states there was a fire in a building and chemicals leaked out into the water.
Pretty normal occurrence I would think.
Funky color,sure. but "weird"? Nah, Just human stupidity.

The Grone was contaminated after a fire of a warehouse was extinguished by the fire brigade. The extinguishing water mixed with chemicals from the warehouse. The green uranine is relatively harmless, but perhaps more dangerous substances have been released as well. According to local anglers, fish seem to have survived the pollution.

Nearly all chemicals and waste products can become dangerous when they contaminate the environment. Uranine makes no difference. But compared to leaked gasoline from a tank, uranine-pollution looks much more spectacular but is also much less harmful.
