Heads up everyone that likes stargazing. I just saw this and hope there'll be no clouds tonight as we're expecting the tail end of the cold front. If that happens there's no reason the rest o you can't enjoy and relay back tp me how awesome it was. Apparantley not that rare but never heard of this before. So here goes hope y'all enjoy it. Stargazers and astronomers are excitedly waiting to see Mars in the night sky this weekend when the planet is at its closest to Earth in over two years - making glow visibly red even to the naked eye.
The event, known as an opposition, happens once every 26 months when the orbits of Earth and Mars align so that the two planets form a relatively straight line with the sun. This cosmic event is called an opposition because the Red Planet sits on the exact opposite side of Earth from the sun.

Neat. I used to live out in the middle of nowhere (nearest neighbor was 2.5 miles away) and could see Mars a lot...always a cool sight to see. If you've got a small telescope and/or get the chance to go out, make sure you take a look!

You can always see Mars and Mars is always a yellowish colour.

I've been looking at Mars for weeks without binos and I'm blind as a bat.

"On March 3, Mars was at opposition to sun because of which it would be brightest and closest it can get to earth on March 5," General Secretary of Planetary Society of India N Raghunandan said.

March 5th is the closest physical proximity date
March 3rd was the when Mars was 180 degrees from the 'conjunction' place in space

The planet will be shining at -1.23 magnitude and can be seen between east and northeast direction. It will be 100.78 million km away from earth, he said.

"Mars will be brightest till end of April 2012. It will be visible in the night sky until February 2013 with decreasing brightness as it gets far from us as days pass by," he said

It will just be easy to find. Strange though, when I look at Mars its always a reddish color.

Same here.
Saturn and Mars always look about the same color to me.
Reddish-orange.
