I keep on talking to myself, especially when I am busy trying to solve a very intricate problem, and I always notice people looking very weird at me when I do that.

For me it is normal, and it is a way I can see all the possibilities, heck, sometimes I would even argue with myself... But the way people look at me, I guess it is not that normal, or accepted.

Do you, or do you not talk to yourself when trying to solve problems, and if you don't talk to yourself, how do you argue with yourself to see different aspects of the same problem?
and if you don't, what do you think about people talking aloud to themselves?

Eh, it's not that weird, until you start arguing with yourself.

It's said that speaking a person's name after you've been introduced helps you to remember their name. Perhaps a similar process is at work when you speak out loud while trying to solve a difficult problem.

I talk to myself all the time and sometimes I do answer myself. Sometimes your the only one that knows the answer to the questions you ask.
I've been know to even start laughing out loud at something I thought of.

Everyone talks to themselves at times. It's just embarrassing when you get caught doing it.

So no, you're not the only crazy one out there.

I do answer myself most of the times, and lots of times I can get into really huge arguments with myself, like in pointing to something, like a line of code, on a computer screen, and saying "Not SO, you idiot, but SO!!!!", and then I would retype everything on that line, and then sometimes I would argue with that, deleting the whole line, and rewriting the original code, and so forth .....

This is a fun issue here at work.
I talk to my self all the time, answering my questions, arguing, all that.
The other lady in the office is now so use to it, she can actually tell when I am talking to myself, or her.

It's normal! Don't worry about it!
Just smile and wave next time they stare at you!

I just think that your meta-cognative mapping would suggest that you have to "see it and hear it" before you understand it. I am this way when working math. I pull the equation into my right mind rearrange it, throw it over to the left side and talk it out to calculate it.

All you are doing is using a sounding board so you can hear yourself think. If it helps, use it.
Just tell them your Meta-Cognative mapping is like this. I'm sure you will either get stranger looks, or just a look of acceptance. There is nothing wrong with you.

Don't worry about it. I talk to myself all the time. I did hear an old quote that went, "It is OK to talk to yourself. It is OK to ask yourself questions and to answer the questions you ask. If you ask yourself to repeat what you just said because you didn't understand it, you might have a problem."

If somebody looks at you strange when you talk to yourself, just smile and say, "Why not?, I'm the only one that listens anyway."

lol, thanks for all your replies. Most of the times I feel quite comfortable with talking to myself, but sometimes I do some contract-work at a new place, where people don't know me, and then they always look very weird at me....

When I am at places that know me, know my eccentricities, they just look at me with a smile, in those places it doesn't feel that weird....

But when I am at a new place, new people, that don't know me, I always fall back into talking to myself, arguing with myself, and then I see those looks on their faces, and then I go, like in "Ho-oh, they are thinking they are dealing with a crazy over here"

I do that, usually when I am working.

The odd thing is even though I do it, when I see some one else do it, I find it strange. This is vice versa, as my co who does it himself, gives me a weird look when I do it!

I think it's actually very common, it's just when people see it happening they are a bit taken back as it is perceived by society as a nut job thing to be doing.

I usually just think my thoughts through. I;ve grown accustomed to seeing what looks like people talking to themselves witht their cell phones and ear buds or bluetooth.

As long as you're not talking loudly or being too strange, there's nnothing wrong with it.

I constantly do that when I feel like i'm onto something. Ill start reasoning and kind of forget i'm talking to myself.

I'm sure if someone else heard me, they'd think i'm cray. I find it normal and kind of funny.

We do not talk to ourselves, we are normal. *twitch*

I do talk to myself, all day. If I am not talking to myself, then I am probably arguing with myself. I get those looks too, only I have fun with those people and sometimes start fake twitching with a twisted smile.
I find that I can solve better problems by speaking my thoughts out aloud, and sometimes those thoughts don't seem to come from my own mind. They can contradict each other, sometimes even in opinions. It especially helps in writing, because I can sort of debate with myself over ideas and wording. The same applies to programming, which I only recently have gotten into.

I talk to myself all day long, also. I never give it any thought until I notice people
giving me odd looks whenI'm talking to myself at the grocery store, or at a public place.
An example would be:

Now, what was it that I was supposed to get? Hmmmm... Oh yeah, I need bread.
That's all the way down toward the end of the store. ( As I walk toward the bread
aisle, I spot paper towels,) Oh, yeah, I should getsome of these. ( I stop for them)
Oh, crap, now what was it that I was on my way to get? What was it? What was it?
Crap, why did I stop for paper towels? I'll remember what it was if I....oh, wait, I
need eggs too, etc. etc.

And that's why people stare at me while I'm grocery shopping.

I talk to myself all the time and I talk to my cats as well.
I don't answer back to either by the way.
