Scientists are keeping a close eye on a new asteroid they fear could collide with earth in 2040.

The 140-m wide object, named 2011 AG5, has already put officials of the United Nations Action Team on near-Earth objects on alert and the agency has begun discussing ways to divert it.

Oh dear, seems 2012 is not al we have to worry about!!

Thanks for posting. I heard it briefly on the news.

Hmmm, how accurate is the year 2040?
The article states that is has only been observed for half an orbit.
Not sure if their calculations give me much comfort.

HAARP can be used to pull/ repel objects from the earth by using the ionosphere somehow like a tractor beam.... So i wouldn't worry about the E.L.E Asteroid equation anymore.

Edit: Allegedly we have avoided 2 E.L.E Asteroids using such methods.

Ummm.. Okay... I don't mean to be rude, but for the MSM.....so what? Prior to becoming a hound for all things space related and specifically about Asteroid and Comet impacts back in September with everyone else around here, I would have really perked up on this. Now though? I'm really baffled by the worry talk??

Space com has this as a 460 foot diameter. SO... Okay, don't be directly under whatever little bit of it survives all the way to the ground. Definitely don't try and catch it.

Outside of that? I guess Phage may have better data available, but it seems to me that how much would even make it all the way to the ground is a valid question. Hmm...

Always something flying at us in space though.

2040 will simply not do!
We will need a cataclysm type event to worry about shortly after 2012 is over or people will start to realize that the sun will in fact rise tomorrow and all of the time they wasted waiting for niburu, jesus, aliens, santa clause is not gonna happen and they should have done something about the now.
Could we reschedule this asteroid for say 2015 perhaps?

An asteroid was discovered in 2011 and was named 2011 AG5. Since the asteroid’s discovery, scientists have plotted as much of its orbit as they can. According to the scientists, there is a very small chance that the asteroid could impact the Earth in February 2040. However, there is no need to wake up Bruce Willis just yet. The scientists have only watched the asteroid for half of its orbit so they can’t say for certain at this point where it will be 28 years from now.

Doesn't seem like a great chance as of yet, seems like fear mongering to pump up the news. saw this on MSNBC, they need all the ratings help they can get.

140 meters... City killer not a extinction event.

As long as it's not an extinction level event I don't really care.

no need to be concerned.

space is cold.

really really cold.

asteroids are cold.

really really cold.

like -273. COLD COLD.

this means asteroids will be very brittle.LIKE ICE IS VERY BRITTLE.

but worse.

how do you break a cold brittle object?

give it a thermal shock

like a bomb.

or a mechanical shock.

like a vibrator.

the missile with the vibrator will be fired at the asteroid and it hammer action cause it to disintegrate.

or even a small bomb will cause an asteroid to shatter.

don't believe me?

remember how they dip a flower petal or bananas in liquid nitrogen and then shatter it in school?

same principle.

it is cold in space.

very very cold in space.

140 m wide is not massive. It would only cause local damage.

28 years to get here?? ,must be a pretty damn slow asteroid.
,might give us a nudge in the right direction .

From the article in the OP:

According to NASA, top ways of deflecting the asteroid are putting a probe onto the rock and using the extra gravity to steer the asteroid away over millions of light years.

What? "extra gravity"? "over millions of light years"?
Great source...of blither.

Long odds. A 0.2% chance of impact in 2040.
A Torino scale of 1:

A routine discovery in which a pass near the Earth is predicted that poses no unusual level of danger. Current calculations show the chance of collision is extremely unlikely with no cause for public attention or public concern. New telescopic observations very likely will lead to re-assignment to Level 0.

It's possible the astroide hit the earth in 2040 but the usa and china and other country have so many weapons in 2040, so they will destroy the astroide
