I live in Illinois about an hour East of St. Louis. They built the let from the bulk plant at Salem, Illinois, to I think Kansas or Missouri about two years ago. I don't remember any big approval back then needed. They just did, and quickly too. They had a lot of problems with inferior Chinese steel, but where else are you going to get steel these days. Anyway, It is weird big parts of the line have already been built and then all of a sudden Jesus Obama puts a monkey wrench in the plan. Go figure.

What you have posted is the truth, but most people will not accept it. They don't think long term. They think about here, now, I can it now, who gives a damn what happens next year. Furthermore, you've got a large portion of society that actually believes oil is abotic or that is doesn't matter at all because Jesus is coming back before they die anyway.

I'm not as familiar as I should be n this project.

A brief read tells me that this is preparation to transport Northern crude into the US if Obama and the legilslative branch agree on the project.

Would this mean less dependency on mideast based crude?

If so, then I am all in favor of this project.
Becoming self-sustainable here in the western hemisphere to me sounds like a good thing.

The reason they want to ship it to the Gulf is to sell it to other countries not use it here in the US. Canada needs to build a refinery to handle this nasty tar sand oil. It's not going to do jack to help lower US gas prices. If it was for use in the US they wouldn't need to pipeline to the Gulf.

Umm.. How is shipping to the Gulf about selling to other nations? The U.S. Refinery capacity is basically in 3 places in order of importance comes the Gulf, California and the Northeast, primarily in the New Jersey area.

Where else would they run the pipeline? California and New Jersey are both Absurd to run it to from where it starts. Talk about nightmares that would never end for jurisdiction and land. Wyoming has some refinery facilities at Cheyenne, among other locations...but they aren't exactly running with major capacity left to fill. So... The Gulf is the only logical spot.

Now, it WILL help my gas prices enormously. I live less than 60 miles from one of the primary distribution points for refined gasoline in the central U.S.. We've always run a good % below national average here...so the faster they run this line to add to domestic supply..the better.

Hope gas comes down for you Wrabbit...for all of us. IF the Obama League of Nation Killers attempts to stop it at our border...all hell will break loose. I hope it becomes a major talking point in the coming elections.

Once it gets built your gas prices will go up, not down.

They plan to sell this oil on the world market.

So this nonsense about it being good for America is bunk, it's good for big oil.

Right now the Midwest is enjoying cheap gas because they can't get it moved to the gulf fast enough, the oil sands of Canada and the new wells in North Dakota is selling for $83 Vs $106 for the oil near the gulf.

I admit to being self serving on this one. The company I own has 11 trucks going out everyday, I'm saving close to a grand a month because of this midwest glut of oil.

I think its nuts, WHY would they build it all the way the the gulf of Mexico?
Where they are to build the largest oil refinery in the world, and sell it all to other countries.

Okay, I'm still failing to see the logic being used here. Let's assume for a moment that this pipeline does cross U.S. soil for the sole and express purpose of sending back out as an export to other nations. Stranger things have happened and I stopped doubting things just because they sounded crazy a few years ago. lol...

For the sake of argument, lets assume that then. It goes out and fills demand on the world market and not a cheap discount for U.S. markets. So......How does MORE supply EVER make prices go UP? More world market supply means those nations who ARE buying the new supply are needing less from other suppliers currently putting oil out. In the grand scheme of supply and demand that requires the price to drop....unless other suppliers cut their market supplies to maintain current world numbers. That's possible....and that is where we need a leader in the White House....not a wimp. Leaders insure limits to those games.

We have the Excel pipeline one running just west of my town and a pumping station is located there. It provides $140000.00 in taxes to the school system. Taxes that the citizens don't have to pay.

And instead of paying direct taxes, all tax rates will increase, and then to top it off, many people are going to lose their property to eminent domain claims.

....But it's for the children, which makes it okay.

Your forgetting that the oil companies will adjust their production to meet demand. The oil companies are run like a monopoly, they don't compete with each other (like the diamond market).

The only reason that oil from the tar sands is economically viable is because the price of oil is so high. If it went back down to $60-$75 a barrel they would lose money trying to extract the oil.

The land for the pipeline will be practically given to them since most of the farmers here won't sell and the government will take their property through eminent domain.

The oil companies make less on local oil, but once it hits the world market it is just as valueable as any other oil on the market.

This pipeline is good for only one thing, big oil's profits.

alot more Americans know the metric system then the world would think well at least the ones that used/sold/bought drugs over the years as most drugs (at low and high ammounts) are usually weighted and sold in metric ie grams kilo's etc so not all Americans are ignorant of the metric system, more on topic i hope this ends up getting passed in america just for the jobs it will create and anything that can make us less dependent on oil sources from the ME the better

It was only 100 miles of pipeline that was protested and it was under State Department study for 3 years and approved. What people don't realise is that there are already two other oil pipelines going in the same area that were built in the 50's. Now does anyone think that a moderan pipeline would be less safe than one built in the 50's?

The Canadian campaign against the project has been a bit more outgoing. Canadian protestors were protesting in Washington non-stop over this.

And quite honestly, this isn't the only proposed pipeline that Canadians are pissed about. The feds want to build a pipeline from the tarsands to Kitimat, through the untouched heart of my province, to supply oil to the Chinese. While I certainly approve of increasing oil exports to the Chinese, I'm not interested in seeing environmental destruction of my homeland, and I am not alone in this regard.

I figured that some of the more "adventurous" sort would know metric. A lot of our workers in the prairies are older too, so we almost run on a metperial system, a combination of imperial and metric. I still have to look up most conversions....

Hopefully, there will be jobs created soon, infrastructure is important to both build up and maintain.

The price of oil needs to continue to go up for us to wean ourselves off of it... Look at all the wars that have been fought for oil in the last few years and the damage it is causing our planet...
