It would speed up the decryption process if you told us more about the content you want us to decipher. What language is it in? Is it computer metadata? An email? Plain text? How was it encrypted? By computer software? How long is the key length?

I received it via email through a friend..... i don't have a computer, or i would try to figure it out on my own.....i don't know any thing about it other then cryptkey is not unlocking it so she must have changed her program, and she won't respond to my emails. She just seems me information to look up..... sorry i can't be more help.....

I would guess PGP from plain text. Not gonna crack it.

Unless we get to know the algorithm ( MD5 / SHA1 / etc .. ) no-one will ever be able to decipher that.

Even if it's an unsaltened MD5 you'd have a hard time finding the single words in any rainbow table.

As pointed out before, it's most likely a PGP encrypted email, that leaves us with 64bit in the best case and what .. 2048 or even more bitz in the worst case ... not a chance.

So, sorry, this is a waste of time.

Easy to get muddled up with the two, for lack of a better word most of the time hashing is refereed as types of encryption.

md5 / sha aren't encryption method's, they are hashing algorithm's, big difference. It can be called one-way-encryption, but it's not possible to recover anything over than a string of text from them via the only method of bruteforce. As in, if one were to use an md5 hash to compare the integrity of a file, the hash isn't neccasarily going to contain every single byte of that file.

If it could we would be able to get 1000's of petabytes of data from a string only 128 bits long.

When that day comes, we would be able to download the entire internet on a 56/k modem in half a second.

Eg; encryption should allow a decryption, such as being able to reverse the process easily with the right password for example.

Thought i'd point it out.

Yep it's definately encrypted with PGP, the general format is the same as atom.smasher.org...

If it was assymetrically encrypted, you'll be able to decrypt using either your private key, or your friend can decrypt with their private key. If its symmetrically encrypted, you'll need the key phrase/password. Without it, you'll never be able to decrypt the data.

I do not agree with you on MD5 not being an encryption algorithm, because it is in my books

If it's an MD5 or SHA1 algorithm, the only way of deciphering it would be using known hashes from a rainbow table. That's of course not decrypting in the common sense, because there is no reverse-algorithm, but it's still an encryption algorithm because you can theoretically decrypt it. Just because *you* can't do it, doesn't mean the NSA can't do it. Theoretically it's a mere question of having all possible word combinations and salts in a huge database. ( And nope, no need to tell me how much storage that would use, I'm aware of that, but that does not mean it is impossible )

Let's focus on the task at hand instead of splitting hairs over the definitions of words.

I was thinking of a PHP script that did encoded the original text letter-by-letter using globs and a "for each" loop. You could even do that taking every single letter of the original text, and have each letter converted to it's MD5 hash. This way it could be easily deciphered again afterwards because the hashes for all letters in the Alphabet are known ( if not saltened )

I wrote a tiny PHP script just to make my point clear:

$pfAlpha = SHA1('a');
$pfBeta = SHA1('b');
$pfGamma = SHA1('c');

echo $pfAlpha;
echo $pfBeta;
echo $pfGamma;

Outputs three times 40 letters:

86f7e437faa5a7fce15d1ddcb9eaeaea377667b8e9d71f5ee7c92d6dc9e92ffdad17b8bd49418f9884a516841ba77a5b4648de2cd0dfcb30ea46dbb4

I bet you will be able to easily decipher that by putting the blocks into the rainbow table search engine of your choice. See what I mean ?

But it's most likely a simple PGP encrypted message, as pointed out before

you can theoretically decrypt it

For hashing algorithm's nope. You can't decrypt a hash, but only crack it by bruteforce or pre-computation.

It's one way.

Take blowfish encryption for example, the salted string is a result of the combination of the password used to encrypt a string (or any other data, such as a file) and the data itself, which vary's depending on the password. With blowfish for example, you can reverse the data/string that was encrypted by using the password. You can't reverse a (for example
sha256 hash into a file, or the original string unless you bruteforce or run a pre-computation attack (such as rainbow tables).

With hashing algorithm's, you can use it for protecting password strings, or checking the integrity of a file. However, the output "hash" is always the same length (for md5 / sha, etc) meaning it is simple to identify which algorithm was used. It's really only useful for comparing things, such as files or a password on a webserver when a user logs in. You can't exactly protect data bit-by-bit with a reversible process uses a hashing algorithm, which is why it isn't a form of encryption.

To be honest, i'm more interested in why the op has been posting this gibberish all over threads today. I think it would help if they posted where they got it, what they think its for, or even the encryption type... if it's that important.

No bull .. I've seen him invading other, non-related threads as well, copy pasting the whole thing.

Let's face it. It's a banal PGP encrypted email from his gf, and he ain't got the key, so it's useless.

For what it's worth .. the whole thing got me looking into Hash collisions .. lol
