Russia is keen not to lose its last foothold in the Middle East, regardless of the nastiness of the Assad regime. If Assad goes then a major Russian arms importer is compromised, alongside any influence they have left in the part of the world and (possibly) a naval base. It is in Russia’s interest to prop up Assad.

China don’t give a fig. They are just after the economic benefits in case Assad survives.

Iran just don’t want to lose one of their allies.

All three nations share something in common. They are all autocracies and members of a shrinking club. If Assad is chucked out then just maybe we’ll end up with a nicer, more democratic part of the Middle East. Neither Russia, China nor Iran want that. I do, and hope Assad’s nasty little police state is wound up and ended.

Syria is a pariah state. Even the rest of the Middle East (bar Iran) think Assad has gone too far.
