Romney in the lead for next week's Arizona primary

The most recent round of polls is out, and as of Friday, Romney had an 8 point lead over Santorum. While Romney's numbers have dipped (and Santorum's raised) in the past month, they both hold a comfortable lead over the third place runner, Newt Gingrich. Ron Paul is a very distant fourth.

Michigan currently shows Santorum ahead, Romney second, Paul third,and Gingrich fourth.

But it ain't necessarily over, as we all know. The Frontloading blog (a respected political analysis blog that many never heard of but which many news sources pay attention to) says that Romney's chances of getting at least 49% of the vote in all the upcoming primaries is NOT certain.

And did you know that Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands also have a hand in selecting presidential candidates? They do.

NPR has an excellent article about the whole confusing Republican process -- and it shows just how much of a mess the Republicans have made of the selection process (some districts in Maine won't caucus for awhile, in spite of the regular Maine caucus being done and gone.)

And yes, the article does mention Ron Paul and his delegates' strategy

There's a bit of history in the link about how the 1968 Democratic National Convention changed the electoral process (it really WAS in the hands of a few before that time) -- and I think we'll see some changes this time.

The numbers are close and any misstep by either Santorum or Romney is going to really change the landscape of "who's in front."

Romney is hanging onto that lead in Arizona by the skin of his teeth.

He needs Arizona.

Michigan looks like it is lost to him...that in itself is a huge blow to him. He has been calling Michigan his home state...and if he loses his "home state"...that doesn't send a good message.

Ohio looks like it is also lost...Santorum is just killing him there. It's been said for awhile that middle America is going to be a big problem for Romney...and it appears that is going to be true. He will do good on the coasts...but middle America doesn't like him.

Georgia is still pulling for Newt...so Romney probably won't win there either. AND, Santorum is threatening to takeover his 2nd place spot in Georgia as well.

So he absolutely needs Arizona...or else he is going to go 0-4 in the next 4 states. This race just keeps getting more and more crazy...it's been fun watching it from the outside though.

I wonder how Mr. Romney feels when he sees history unfolding that looks like this:
