Ray tracing used for obfuscation?

Yeah photoshop is much simpler, but it won't ray trace in a 3d object with full control of material attributes and such..

I'm betting they wouldn't normally spend the time using the more sophisticated apps to do it though...

But there's no need of making 3D objects, creating and applying material attributes and all that just to hide something when they can just remove it from the photo.

I did a test some years ago in which I posted two photos, and nobody could detect which one was altered and what was altered. It was the first time I used Photoshop.
