IMHO, being part of any religion is something at best any modern educated person should do simply to "not make their parents feel bad" and celebrate the traditions and culture as simply that and not take it all too seriously in the details unless they are an imbecile.

Converting to a religion that is in direct opposition to a scientific and modern future and is also sort of at war with the people you grew up with, maybe not in a direct way in all reality but pushing a philosophy of "convert the nonbeliever" to make a point, well this sort of makes you a treasonous jerk and stupid to boot.

Modern Fanaticism is already the bane of our futures (kind of funny how Iran and Israel either have or want a Nuclear bomb right? Science hellloooo, buy all those missiles) Where are the Valkyries and Angels and Lightning bolts from those misfits huh?

I think only believers can go to some of the holy sites so that might be why he converted. Would make access a lot easier.
