Hello all

i just ordered some silene capensis (african dream root)

and Calea zacatechichi. (leaf of god)

just wondering if anyone had any experience with any of these ethnobotanicals, more so the african dream root

i came across this warning which really got me interested = )

Warning: It is said that the effects of this plant can/will become permanent. Most people using it agree that after 3 months of taking this plant on a daily basis and under recommended dosage, the effects cannot be reversed, EVEN if you stop taking the root. You will continue to have anywhere up to 5 or more vivid dreams throughout the night, and enhanced dream recall. While all these things sound positive, this plant is connected to the Xhosa African tribe and brings the user into what is called the "White Paths", it is believed to be connected to spirits, and the plant is said to have a consciousness of it's own. If that's something you'd rather not permanently associate yourself with, then do not take this root. The only plant that is said to (momentarily) reverse its effects is cannabis, but after a few months the vivid dreams will return.

Never heard of it or tried it, but have been taking Chantix for a while, which caused the most exciting and active dreaming I ever had in my life! I look forward to sleeping each night, because I'll be having all kinds of adventures. But as far as I know, the effect is not permanent. I'd be hesitant to try anything that is said to cause such a permanent change....

You are better off sticking to POT. You really might not want to take something with those side effects. You might end up with an issue you don't want. Permanately.
I read an artical in Tme magazine several years ago where one reporter went to the South American jungle and hooked up with some of the locals. They had a ritual thing where they drank this juice. When the reporter woke up the next day the ability to read and write was completely gone. It took 2-3 years to relearn the English language.

That's not very believable. Do you have any sort of evidence or links that can support this claim of memory loss?

I wouldn't take that if I were you. I often have dreams where I work a whole day and always wake up before being paid. I feel like I just put in a 12 hour shift after I wake up. My luck I'de have one of those every night.

i have been smoking pot for the past 8 years , chronically for the last 4 ( 7-10 times a day)

i NEVER remembered my dreams because of short term memory loss from the pot

i quit since i got into lucid dreaming/astral projection and the recall is starting to come back

Never had the african herb, but calea...

I hope you love the taste of the most bitter foulest plant I've ever tasted

Can't say it worked a lot, but I hear you're supposed to go direct to sleep for it to have it's desired effect, I often couldn't force myself to.

Good to see ethnobotanicals are still going out there however, keep nature thriving!!

-- also some info on selene that may be of interest:

Silene spp.

Botanical information

A sticky glandular perennial herb, up to 60 cm. with spathulate-oblong, up to 15 cm leaves in a basal rosette. Flowers are in lax terminals. Calyx cylindric, tubular, ribbed with dark, glandular veins. Petals white. Flowers are mostly seen with the petals rolled inwards during the day, but turgor returns in the cooler part of the evening and night. Capsule oblong-ovoid, opening by recurved valves to release several small round seeds.

Propagation is by seed sown into very well draining, sandy seeding mix. Silene capensis loves water, but will also suffer from root rot if drainage is less than perfect.

Propagation by division is possible, but not economical. Very susceptible to lawn grubs, frost and dehydration.

Traditional uses

Undela Ziimhlophe is one of several species used by african healers as an oneirogenic (dream inducer). These oneirogenics are part of a healing system called Ubulawu. The dreamstate is highly regarded in the healing process and as a way of connecting to ancestral spirits. Most ubulawu plants are very potent and have sideeffects so adhering to traditional preparation methods is paramount.

Undela Ziimhlophe is prepared by drying the root and grinding it to a fine powder. This is then mixed with water as required and agitated to produce a froth. Only the froth is consumed.

Neoshaman have developed an acceptable substitute method by adding 1g of the the powder to a 750ml or larger bottle filled quarter full with water. This is then shaken vigorously for few minutes and the froth is removed by squeezing the bottle. The remainder is put into the fridge for the next day, when the bottle is once again shaken and the froth removed for consumption. After a few days the material will no longer froth and a further 1g is added to the same bottle or a fresh bottle is started. Effects have been achieved by consuming the equivalent of 200mg of powder per day for several days. Significant dream states are supposed to occur after the third consecutive day of ingestion and can be maintained for a few more days by continuing consumption.

The main side effect of Undela Ziimhlophe is nausea or rather emesis. The herbal material has been suggested to have a very strong emetic action if taken as a powder, but rarely as froth. Several internet sites recommend the consumption of 200mg on an empty stomach and to not eat for at least an hour or until appetite returns. Several experimenters have noted no nausea from this method.

Traditional use of Silene capensis appears to be less cautious with the dosage. The froth produced from anything between half a teaspoon to a heaped tablespoon can be consumed at once just before bedtime for immediate effects. The sleep following the ingestion should be full of prophetic dreams and should provide answers to the questions one seeks.

We shall report about our own experiments on the forums shortly.

Pharmacology

Little is known of the pharmacology of Silene capensis. Extensive traditional use indicates a wide margin of safety, but reporting of adverse effects may not be complete. The frothing indicates the presence of saponins and it is believed these might be responsible for the activity.

Good job backing off the substance. One thing that helps me recall dreams is to simply meditate on the fact I want vivid and/or lucid dreams before bed. Also focus on your hands for several minutes before bed. I am a huge fan of my dreams and when dreaming I pay attention for cues, like when someone says my name, or I see my own reflection or it starts to get VERY vivid, thats my cue I'm lucid. But I'm a colossal screwup when it comes to making the best of my lucid dreams

A few supplements I've played with that supposedly help with dreams are Schisandra berries, Holy Basil and Melatonin. The Melatonin never did much for me (but is said to also induce nightmares) but the Schisandra and Holy Basil do seem to help a bit. I also head West when I sleep and have an assortment of crystals at the head of my bed

So are you saying that you want to take this stuff to enhace or embellish your dream state? If that is the case, there are other ways to acomplish that. You can get one of those dream masks. It has lights around the edges and is set to flash on a timer. When the lights flash, that is your brains que to engage in lucid dreaming. It can also be done with sound. Or, if you have the ability to awake without opening your eyes, you will be able to continue a dream and have control over it.
