seems to me that capacity is not a problem. Hell, the ships carry 1600 tons of fuel alone. Add ammunition, food, oil etc.
It was not uncommon for ships of that size to carry 70,000 ton war load. You do the math

What was the class of destroyer used? Where would they hide the gold? How much gold/destroyer would have to be carried?
