i would not beleive it had i not seen it for myself

the bottom 20% of tax payers pay MUCH more taxes as a percentage than the very very wealthy
every single state in america the top 1% is soaking the poor with unfair taxes

i think the top 1% should pay AT LEAST the same rates

The Corporation for Enterprise Development recently released a scorecard for all 50 states, and it has boatloads of useful information. That includes overall tax rates, where data from the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy shows that in the median state (Mississippi, as it turns out) the poorest 20 percent pay twice the tax rate of the top 1 percent. In the worst states, the poorest 20 percent pay five to six times the rate of the richest 1 percent. Lucky duckies indeed. There's not one single state with a tax system that's progressive. Check the table below to see how your state scores.

Bs Half this country doesn't pay taxes.

www.huffingtonpost.com...

Seriously sitting there saying the bottom pays more in taxes?

Yeah someone who makes 30k a year is paying the more than a person who makes 100k

Freaking Ridiculous.

Add in various excise taxes, like for telephone service, ready-to-eat food taxes, tires, gasoline.... the list goes on and on.... Then you will see that the poor get screwed more than this info shows!

Income should be taxed as a flat rate across the board, with those below the poverty level not taxed at all.

This is a pointless argument - Did you pay 14.9% in taxes? Probably not.

They are using State taxes in this example. As a percentage of the person's income. It is a little misleading.

The rich pay low taxes because they are the business owners and producers.

Let me clue you in on something, you can't tax the rich.

Crap rolls down hill, and the working man is at the bottom.

Any tax on business will immediately be passed through in the form of higher prices.

Any tax on investors will immediately be passed on to the back of working people in the form of fewer PRODUCTIVE jobs. The State will simply spend the money on cronyism or adding more useless bureaucrats to its payrolls.

Fewer productive jobs means less people making washing machines and more people issuing parking tickets. Parking tickets do not improve people's lives. The washing machine on the other hand does.

Personally, I don't think taxes should be taken out like that.

I feel that it should be a % (some arbitrary number, single digit would be optimum) and it should be the same across the board. It's equal and everyone pays their fair share.

It would be even better if their wasn't an income tax and people just paid the taxes on non food purchases.

What are you some kind of socialist?

The way the one percent looks at it is it's not the percent but how much you pay. Then they complain about the poor not paying taxes. But you are right everyone should pay the same percent in taxes.

Not terribly surprised.

I had a stretch of unemployment years ago and when it came tax time I actually had to pay in above the amount that had been witheld.

My gross income for the year could never have put a roof over my head, plus put food on the table, let alone luxuries such as a means to get back and forth to work.

And I was genuinely trying my best, including picking up any temp work available. Ended up having to live with my parents for a stretch.

"All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident."

You, sir, are somewhere between the first and second stage. Just because something is inconvenient doesn't mean it's not true.

I've heard that in the US, you also have your mortgage interest as a tax deduction.

That would be another thing that helps richer people, because you have to be a homeowner to get that.

That said, I wish we had that deduction up here......

What people who babble about "the poor pay no taxes" fail to realize is that the working poor actually do pay taxes.

They get it back the end of the year after the government has already used their money to keep running all year and inflation has already eaten up ~3-5% of the purchasing power.

The net affect is that they pay very little in the way of personal, direct federal income taxes, but to say that they pay no tax is a misnomer, as anybody who works for near-poverty wages can tell you when they get their paycheck every week.

Also, when you consider that the upper class can afford accountants to find them all those juicy loopholes or can put their money in offshore accounts, I have no doubt that the overall burden is light.

It's the middle class that gets screwed, and the people who have been shipping all your jobs overseas and screwing you over to make a quick buck are trying to brainwash you to blame the people who sweep the floors, clean the toilets, and check out your groceries and convince you that they are entirely at fault.

Of course Neo's all over this. How silly we are for thinking the rules should be fair. Why would we ever want the rich to pay the same percentage as the poor? My goodness, don't we all understand that those 1% folks have all the burden and none of the benefit? Where is our sense of human decency?

Every rich person provides jobs or produces something? What about wall street investors? What are they producing?

Nothing. They become rich off the backs of everyone else while contributing nothing to society. So why are they paying lower tax rates than the rest of us? Because they are rich enough to not only change tax laws to favor them, but they can afford to hire countless tax professionals to find every bogus loophole there is. The tax code needs to be changed to benefit only those companies who really create good paying jobs and have a positive effect on society. That wont happen while we have corporate dictators running the show.

I think your right though. If we tax the businesses who create real jobs and produce goods, they will most definitely pass the bill to us. They have a monopoly on all the money. They pay their workers less and less while paying less and less taxes and if they are threatened to pay more, they threaten us. They wont give back any of it either, so the middle class is left to foot the tax bill while making less. We will continue on this path until the people wont have any money to buy the products and services being produced, and society will collapse.

Tell me about it, we made 40 something thousand (don't want to give the exact number) and we will not be getting anything back this year (family of 3). Was expecting to get back the eic and push down some debt but oh well.

I am glad that we make this much, unfortunately its between 2 full time adults.

I live in Washington state...which is at the top of this list. I got $8.00 back from Uncle Sam. I make less than $30,000 a year in taxable income. My next door neighbor owns a chain of health/fitness centers. He just bought a new car and a boat.

WTF?

What else is new?

He always feels the need to try and influence us to believe that the super wealthy are always the poor, poor suffering victims all the time.

And here we have those "luckie-duckie" tax-exempt folks who barely make enough to live in a cardboard box and eat scraps, struggling to survive even on their BEST DAY!

Those luckie-duckies have it SO great while those POOR SUFFERING super-wealthy are hurting so bad. Lets all shed a tear for them as Neo thinks we all should.

Business owners, huh? Most average business owners (the majority) ARE the middle class.
