"Astronomers have discovered four new planets in a weeks time, an exciting end-of-summer flurry that signals a sharper era in the hunt for new worlds."

Four planets in one week!
Major props to all contributors.

if they can find new planets, does the hubble have enough power to zoom in and see if theres any sign of life?

I've always wondered the same thing about hubble. If it can look so far out....can't it look into the planets of our solar system. I think I heard somewhere that it can't because it was designed to look so deep into space. Anyone know for sure?

I don't think planets reflect enough light to be able to see details about planets that are so far away.

The hubble isnt available anymore is it? i thought i read somewhere that it wont ever be used again.

But theres the Next Gen Telescope coming in a few years and that is supposed to be more powerful than the hubble.

Also i have seen images of different galaxies from the hubble site so i dont get why scientists keep saying they have discovered different planets when the hubble capture hundreds of different planets and galaxies with full high res images, how did they do this?

You know... all you need to do is hit google, and type "hubble telescope" and you'll get the first result as: hubblesite.org...

I'm looking at images from last week on there... Hubble is definitely still working. Hubble isn't being taken "offline" for a while yet - there was a large movement in the astronomy world to "save" it and get more use out of it, thankfully NASA and the USA has listened (so far!).

Hubble captures trillions of stars. I've yet to see a hubble photograph of a planet outside our solar system. You do realise just how far away the nearest star with a planet is right? And you do realise that the "light" coming from the planets is just a reflection of the sun (and in distant planets around other stars it's a reflection of light from that star). Hubble can't even see minute detail of moons around Saturn, or the surface of Neptune - so why would you assume it can see the surface of a planet around another star system?

Is hubble being shut down? No. Read the news on the hubble website yourself: hubblesite.org...

CatHerder i did not say hubble captured planets surfaces i know that, i also know that the light coming from planets is reflected light from whichever star is near them.

Also i only say i have seen planets from the hubble because of this.

hubblesite.org...

I dont know if the hubble took this image or not.

I just presume. Also the site has images of other galaxies.

hubblesite.org...

No need to be so patronising.

Sit back and watch the video. Im sure all you hubble fans will be happy that none other than Canada is saving your beloved telescope! Infact it seems that Dexter might even add to the hubble!

that link dont work, sir, but i like your username. i love robot wars, and was devastated when it, and all of techtv, was cancelled here.

i heard about the planets and its really fantastic. i love that we're getting so far so fast, we've gotten down to neptune size planets so quickly its amazing. itll take some time to get to earth size, but even then its worth a wait.
i dig the planet orbiting its sun every 4 days. thats rough. id be roughly 2050 years old, and still young!

anyway, hubble's up and its stayin, at least for a while. it shud last till 07, 08 on its own. im not really worried, the love for hubble is so widespread that any president wud be hard pressed to relaly cancel it, even with spitzer and this next-gen machine(?) that markjaxson speaks of.

i do believe the light from the star makes it imposible to see the planets. the only way they can discover the planets is to look at the star to see if it vibrates. if a vibration is discovered that means there is a planet orbiting and causing some gravitational pull. the larger the vibration the larger the planet.
