Los Angeles and Ontario airports in California have been closed due to radar failure. A full ground stop has been put in place. A major power outage in Nevada is the claimed source, but this has not been officially confirmed. No flights are being allowed to take off, but air traffic is being allowed to land.

ABC News
Radio failure at a Federal Aviation Administration control facility forced some airports in the West to hold flights on the ground Tuesday afternoon, a Los Angeles International Airport spokesman said.

Flights were not being allowed to depart, but flights in the air were being allowed to land.

There was no estimated time as to when the FAA will lift the national ground stop.

This is interesting. Did it just happen or did it happen a while ago. Also, how big is this major power outage?

thematrix,

Los Angeles International Airport suffered its third power outage in 10 days when a bird landing on a power line forced the airport to switch to a backup energy supply, officials said.

Thanks for the reply Jarhead.
At the fact that a bird landing on a power line caused a power outage.

Has anyone heard any news from Nevada? It was briefly reported that that is where the outage originated.

KNBC is reporting that it was a TRACON facility in Palmdale, CA that caused the problem.

It's interesting to note that President Bush was in Las Vegas today. Even though his flight departed before the radio failure began, a plane full of reporters that follow him were stranded.

LAX seems to be having a lot of problems lately. It seems they shut down last weekend for several hours.
It also seems like they've had other issues this year with not being open.

Like I wasn't terrified to fly already:

Terror in the skies Tuesday over California: Five dangerous passes and at least two near-mid-air collisions, according to air traffic controllers.
The incidents occurred shortly after controllers lost radio contact with 400 aircraft coming in and out of airports across the West -- when a computer unexpectedly shut down because technicians forgot to service the computer as required every 30 days. Because they did not dump the hard drive, the computer overloaded.

Absolutely mind-boggling. See the full story here
