They Called Kennedy Crazy; Why Newt's Lunar Colony is a GREAT idea.

The OP is a wonderful example of why gullible and naive people are ruining this once great nation.

A moon base would be very cool. One major problem though: we can't afford it. Note even close. You can't compare this to Kennedy. Back then we had a very small federal budget deficit. We also had a relatively robust manufacturing capacity. Our unemployment rate was aound 4% (meaning the government had a lower social subsidy bill). The fact is we simply can't afford it. We can't afford the wars either. Again, it's a great idea but something we're going to have to put off until we get our financial house in order.

Really because I see more people agreeing with me that it is a great idea! Not the fact that it will defiantly be difficult to do.

Problem with putting a man on the moon was the public's perception of how far advanced our engineering was. Problem with starting a lunar colony is financial. We have too many financial problems right now to be attempting it, though it would be nice. In the end, American's come first.

It is a great idea. What is crazy is saying that we can do it in eight years.

There's no way a project like that could be done in eight years, especially since it would take at least 2-3 years to even begin progress.

Wow it's always evil republicans as if the democrats have done no wrong The idea of building a colony on the moon is intriguing, the US needs something as a goal again. All this doom and gloom lately having a lofty goal like a "moon base" might also do wonder's for diplomacy. Not to mention the spin off technology. Thanks to NASA we have such neat toys like wireless drills and such, imagine what else could be created?? B

What would be so cool about it? Who's gonna go live on the moon? I'm sorry, but if the pics NASA has kicked down are, indeed, of our moon's surface, why would anyone in their right mind want to live on a colony there? What would they do there? Why should we spend money on that sort of thing when we can't even handle our finances here on Earth?

And why does ANY country need to be the first to colonize it? If we ever do it, why can't it be a joint effort between all nations? That's what Kennedy wanted was for us to work in unison on these space projects. I have no tolerance for the notion that the U.S. must fork out billions to colonize the moon just to be able to say we did it first.

Yeah, I agree, but if anybody can figure out a way to do it, it's Newt. He's got some high IQ i believe and he's the smartest out of all the candidates. He'd be able to pull it off in 10-15 years.

We can do both at the same time! Invest in space agency. Get it back up and going again this will create the gov't jobs that those on the left love. This will increase patriotism, inspire education, and create thousands of jobs. Once established the oil and financial crisis will be solved in a manner of months! When did I ever say there was oil on the moon? Going to the moon will allow us to capitalize on the resources available up there. There are a few minerals that are priceless if we set up minning operations there. The moon base could be paid off relatively quickly if we do it right. The moon base could also help us with our economic problems here at home, because of those miinerals we will be able to pay off our debts and use those resources for our advantage.

It's not a matter of figuring it out. 15 years is a much more realistic expectation. But more if we're talking large moon colonies. There are advantages to be had if we're talking long term space exploration.

I highly doubt Newt can do it. I do believe that maybe he can start the ball rolling.. But Im not going to vote for him for that.
