The virus found in birds on the two properties is a low pathogenic avian influenza (LPAI) and not the deadlier form of the virus that spread through Asia, threatening humans and leading to a mass cull of poultry.

The two farms are about 25km apart in an area north of Melbourne.

So now, the Bird Flu has appeared in Australia, the first time since the 1990's. I don't care that they say it is a low pathogen strain, the fact is, they don't want it mutating, and since these 2 farms are 25 km apart, there is a good chance that the flu could spread and end up mutating somewhere in the wild, where there are no scientists to destroy it.

H5N1 is the bird flu to worry about right now - there are lots of other strains. The strain causing this outbreak hasn't been identified, but the experts are blaming wild birds - hopefully not on a flight path from Indonesia.

The source of the latest outbreak has not been confirmed, but officials believe the virus could have been introduced from wild waterfowl known to harbour influenza viruses.

Yeah agree with you there mate.I just hope that the flu doesn't end up mutating which is what they fear. So, this whole istuation is up in the air.

Flus always mutate - H5N1 and H1N1 have been infecting people and pigs for years now. No doubt some hosts have been infected simultaneously, and there already are a few hybrids around. The big one really is just around the corner. ...Maybe H5N1 will become easily transmissible; maybe H1N1 will become more lethal. Maybe something else entirely will pick up H5N1's lethality and H1N1's transmissibility. Who knows? But nature is truly amazing and terrorists are the least of our worries.
