For your FIRST gun, you can't go wrong here. The Ruger Mark III will last generations.

I have loads of guns. But I purchased the Target model a couple of weeks ago. It's just a lot of fun to line up cans and fire away.

At Walmart, a box of 550 rounds of Federals or Remingtons go for under twenty bucks. Fire away.

I use my Ruger to warm up for shooting my Glock. To me, they have similar feels in the slide action.

For me, the combination of Ruger .22 with Glock .40 works very well.

Make your Glock .40 your second weapon of choice.

PS....always use ear plugs.

First pistol, heres my advice:

1)Dont go for a 'hand cannon'. for a novice shooter, you simply dont need that big a caliber.
2)you mentioned concealment-in that case, dont go with a 1911. They are great guns, but are meant as a sidearm, not a concealed carry weapon.
3)Go with a decent brand, maintain it, and you wont have to worry about jams.
4)9mm and .40sw have plenty of stopping power, are far more concealable, and are easier to fire for a newbie.

Now, you mentione3d home protection. My biggest piece of advice here is, if it is going to be used for that purpose, DO NOT BUY A HANDGUN. Handguns for home protection are a HORRIBLE idea. For that purpose, you cannot do better than a simple 12ga. shotgun.

In my opinion, pistols should NEVER be used as home protection, unless it is the last and only option. You are as likely to put a round through your wall and kill an innocent as you are to hitting your target. Even if you do hit your target, there is a high likelihood of overshoot.

Get an UZI.
Or get a sawed off shotgun and install a knife under the barrel.
If these are not an option, get a turkey gun.

an UZI? Seriously? Im guessing youve never fired one.....possibly the sloppiest auto ever made.

I mean, if you're going to shoot indoors, might as well spray double aught all over the house.

Shooting indoors?

Cross a rottweiller with a doberman and keep the animal well fed but not liking intruders.

Then use a baseball bat to finish whatever the rottdobbie tires of chewing on.

A Samurai Sword is cool, too.

Cause if an intruder actually enters your house, and has a gun, the intruder is not going to worry a whole lot about his rounds going through your house's walls.

It's not likely to be a one way fight.

Firearms much better. your dog idea will backfire if the intruder has a firearm.

Check state laws on home invasion actions.

but for a first firearm i recomend a stoeger cauger 8000 in 9mm. great edc. durable as an ak but small enough to carry everywhere.

but if you want 100% reliable you want to go the revolver route. ruger and smith and wesson make the best ones i have seen.

the chiappa rhino is a revolver in 357 mag. has the recoil of about a 9mm though. the reason being is the barrel is in the 6 oclock position and not the 12. (the bottom of the cylinder folks) but the things ugly as fU&k

also will run you about 700$

I'm plannign to get a rhino and a smith and wesson mp r8
