ISWA Cygnet Streamer

Well its finally erupted sunspot 1402 has thrown our way a class m9 flare

ALMOST-X FLARE AND CME: This morning, Jan. 23rd around 0359 UT, big sunspot 1402 erupted, producing a long-duration M9-class solar flare. The explosion's M9-ranking puts it on the threshold of being an X-flare, the most powerful kind

The Solar and Heliosphere Observatory (SOHO) and the STEREO-Behind spacecraft have both detected a CME rapidly emerging from the blast site. Analysts at the Goddard Space Weather Lab estimate a velocity of 2200 km. There is little doubt that the cloud is heading in the general direction of Earth. A preliminary inspection of SOHO/STEREO imagery suggests that the CME will deliver a strong glancing blow to Earth's magnetic field on Jan. 24-25 as it sails mostly north of our planet
( info from spaceweather.com )

Could this be the one that starts our electrical problems ?

any help on links or info on this would be great as im new to the sun solar flare watching

peace to all

This one looks like a pretty good size one ive seen tons of people post c class and lower end m class and try to fear monger with them but m9 is pretty good sized one now if it was X9 i would be seriously worried. m9 could cause some cell problems and sat issues i dont think its big enough to knock out power stations though.

yeah ive read those threads too , it caught my eye as its close to the x class . on the cygnet streamer it looks huge . im not worried i just hope were all safe and it doesnt cause any grid , cell problems. with all the strange weather etc going on i hope everyone stays safe .

peace

This has been happening all last week, I've seen the threads but never looked at one. Are the flares getting more intense or is it just random?

How big would a flare have to be to knock out a power grid? And, how serious is an M9 cme, how would effect earth and our magnetic field? Would it damage it? Sorry about all the questions lol, I'm just curious.

If you or your immediate family have a family history of melignant melanoma - then, perhaps you'd want to wear sunscreen (even if it is Winter) and longsleeves if spending the day outdoors.

To give you some perspective, X class (the class above M class flares) - in records kept since 1976, the largest since then was on 4 November 2003 with an X28+

Bet you don't even remember that day.

is there a site where you can get exact times that they arrive for different countries??

Not serious at all, it will not cause any damage, it's an "M" flare. If you are reading this post and don't know anything about solar flares it sounds like it's serious but it's not.

In any case it's forecast to give only a glancing blow. Doom is postponed for another day I think.

We had an electro magnetic storm the predicted this weekend hit last night and consequently Tornatdos are rushing through Alabama and some areas, some towns wiped out completely, people have died, just horrible.

This is another event that looks like it can be both a flare and a CME combined and that makes it a bit more than an X flare.

Its really time to get our meditations, prayers and Love on.

If we get one to top this:

At 21:51 UT, Monday 2 April 2001, active region 9393 unleashed a major solar flare. Now reclassified as at least an X20, it appears to be the biggest X-ray flare on record,

then we might start having some problems.
adding: it could be a constant bombardment of these M's and C's that are our undoing...I'm thinking we know really very little about the subject

We've already been having some rather large problems, ranging from volcanic to earthquakes to Tornados, to animal die offs, to floods and strange weather and winters, and this hasn't reached peak, that happens in 2013.

Since when has a storm system been connected to a solar event? Never!
So now we are cooking the stories to change when astronomers mean when they classify a solar event?

When in doubt makes stuff up? That's what it looks like.

Volcanic activity is not up. Earthquakes are not up. Tornadoes are not up. Animal die offs are not up.

About the only thing that is planned to peak is the solar maximum. That has been happening every 11 years on average.

That is because noone has tried connecting the events...storms do seem to be up actually, strange weather up, die-offs up, not sure where you get your non-existent statistics from, but even the weathernetwork here in Canada has been reporting for quite awhile that all sorts of UNSEEN behaviours , are happening all the time now, and no, 11 year cycles are NOT being followed by anyone with any sort of reality anymore .

Storms are up? If the Earth is warmer then storms will be up especially if you include all storms from mild rains to wind. Die offs are not up. So the weather changes. Makes for idle chatter. Check the big storms.

There are around 85 big storms a year in the world.

The sun follows an 11 year cycle. Has been on an 11 year cycle for centuries. Solar astronomers follow 11 year cycles.

This link should help, as it shows a prediction model with universal time so you just have to adjust for that depending on where you are.

Spectacular.

I think the biggest thing people need to realize is that even if a solar flare were directed straight towards earth, the earth magnetic field averts said flares around it. Only extremely strong concentrated flares might be able to penetrate it. and thats a big might. it would have to be of epic proportions that this world have never witnessed in recorded astronomical history. so don't lose your # over this. there are many other things i would be afraid of way before solar flares. a solar flare destroying earth has the same odds as there being a world wide earthquake that will destroy the planet, it just doesn't happen.
