A prominent Chinese writer close to Nobel Peace Prize winner Liu Xiaobo has described "inhumane treatment" that forced him to leave. ...Mr Yu, 38, wrote "China's Best Actor: Wen Jiabao", a controversial book that scrutinised the premier. The book was banned in mainland China....There he said he was stripped of his clothes, beaten for hours and told that his naked photos would be posted online. He said he also suffered cigarette burns.

"They verbally abused me non-stop with vulgar language, calling me a traitor to the state and to the Chinese people, and trash," he wrote in the statem

I'm amazed mostly by the response from the Chinese foreign ministry... They don't see a human rights issue at all... They state -
"It is not because China is repressing freedom of expression... it is because they reached the bottom line of China's law."

I haven't read the book but honestly their reaction to it makes me want to.... Talk about publicity.

Its China, what do you expect? Their definition of human rights is nowhere near the internatioanl definition of human rights. Because of how tightly controlled their society is, they can state there is no human rights violations and people will buy it because all they see is one side of the story.

China is facing increasing internal dissent, especially in their far off western provinces. They have had to redeploy military and security forces to help put those revolts down. There is one town Chinese government forces have completely cut off, attempting to end the dissent through starvation.

In this partciluar case, with the proliferation of technology, the tighter the chinese government clenches its fist, the more cities that will slip through their fingers. The Chinese people have gotten a taste of freedom which has made their appetite for it voracious. Its an appetite the Chinese government cant feed without losing their power and control.

Its only a matter of time before government change comes to Beijing.

It's China, no surprises here.

If China ceased to exist tomorrow, the world would be a MUCH better place, in so many ways.

There is a wee bit of a difference there,

I am no fan of the current U.S government and their ways,not by a long shot (this used to be different for me).But at least when the U.S is guilty of abusing human rights they break laws and they try to do it in secret (e.g GTB) and do their best to cover it up. That does of course not make any of it right but , it is against the law and does reduce such behaviour. In china such a attitude is not even necessary and they simply do the things described in the op and much worse without restraint or shame and guilt. It is as far as the chinese government is concerned acceptable ,normal even.12 Executions occur in china at minimum everyday for crimes committed that would not even land you 6 months in jail in the U.S,

Not even close but feel free to continue trying to compare the US to China while subtly insinuating the US is worse. Its blind ignorance like that that causes people to support China as the new world policeman without fully understanding what that entails..

If I had to choose between the Us and Chinese system, it will be the Us hands down every day of the week and twice on Sundays. Since they dont allow independent thought or independent religion in China, I guess you cant have your twice on Sundays.

What a load of rubbish! Just another person spreading hate speech. So, what you are saying is because the government is bad, then the whole of China ceasing to exist would make the world a better place. China is not perfect, but America is not perfect either. These pointless wars have put america on the brink of being bankrupt. And dont even get me started on teh tsa or the controlling of the internet that the american government is trying to put forward.

Well, everyone thank you for your contributions... Here's my thought - It seems that
government = evil/corruption/etc regardless of which country you speak.
Therefore an argument or discussion about who's government is bigger/badder is futile. They are all horrible, some are just worse than others and that could just be dependent on the day and who your asking.

China's population is over 1.3 billion (assumed by the recorded 2010 pop. was just over 1.3 billion according to a quick google search.) I guess I've been entirely out of the loop, too many crazy things going on in the world to know about them all it seems, but your telling me the world's biggest population is under that much control?

Something's got to give at some point. You can only push people for so long...
