Johann August SUTER

I've recently read a book of a french author called Blaise CENDRARS. This Book (GOLD; L'or en francais) is the story of the life of a german citizen call Johann-August SUTTER who travelled in USA in the last century and became proprior of the whole california teritory, while the goldrush.

Have you more information about him ?

Is this man existed or real or does Cendrars invented this person for the needs of his book...

Most of it's absolutely true, Nans (except that Sutter didn't do very well at all and went bankrupt).
He was Swiss by origin and then became Mexican (as California was part of Mexico when he went there).
Sutter's Mill is still a tourist site.
This was the most famous Gold Rush in history (the forty-niners) and went a long way towards making the recently conquered California a part of the US (President Polk himself endorsed the Gold Rush)
