I remember a time when wikipedia was not accepted in schools or education as a valid source of research.

That, I guess, is why we used to have actual encyclopaedias. 26 volumes of information. Oh what a time we live in, without the internet you cannot get an education.

Bit like saying "But I have no tablet, how can I do my homework!" and it being accepted... gone are the days of "The dog ate it!" rofl

Its funny I caught wiki right before they blacked out then hit reload about 20 secs later she was blacked out nice

Cool, so maybe this whole thing will land a huge blow.

Anyone else notice Google is jumping on the train? Their approach is far less drastic than Wikipedia's but their logo has a censor bar over it today.

I sometimes use Wikipedia for my school work also, as do many of my other classmates from earlier semesters, but I just started my spring semester today, so there's not really much I would be looking up yet. (Of course other schools start at different dates, but in my area, we are just now starting).

I do wonder..... imagine if Wikipedia did this during the week of final exams....

Haha, absolutely. I wouldnt be suprised if a few of my old classmates decided to just give up and drop the class.

On the bright side, maybe this would help stop some students from procrastinating?

That is like a neon sign screaming from the heavens by Google standards. They cannot do more or they'd risk destabilizing an embarrassing % of the Internet. I was looking at my own sites awhile ago and considering what would be effected or crash outright if feeds into google API's and internal services were down. Hmm.. Email.. Calendar and Scheduling...Logging/Audit trail for at least 60% of my data...and a lot more than I want to mention.

If nothing else, this whole blackout has already caused me to pause in how often I'm hitting Wiki in search results for this or that...and how deeply interdependent other things have become. It sure wouldn't take much in lost services or interruptions in different areas to really cause chaos and a sense of anarchy in people.
