The riddle involves the phenomenon of 'suspension of disbelief' inherent in storytelling and its power over the human imagination. If one were to make the story a bit more complex and compelling the illusion is almost guaranteed to work in the moment of its telling and can be a good illustration for the explanation of the anomaly, although not a perfect one because there is an explanation. The more points added to the story cause the listener to pause and try to compute what each element may signify.

The shirt cost £48.50 each to your mum and dad. You gave them a £1.00 back each and owed them 50p each. You kept the last £1.00

50 + 50 = 3 + 97(shirt) = 100 in debt
(50-1) + (50 - 1) = (3-2) + 97(shirt) = 98 in debt
49 + 49 = 1 + 97(shirt) = 98 in debt
98 = 1 + 97(shirt) = 98 in debt

anyway.. moral of the story is. get a job and stop taking money from your parents

these days, you'll lose your shirt and have to pay interest on something you don't even have anymore (other than your debt)....but you have one quid for the bus

This like counting the fingers on your hands....hold up one hand and count your fingers backward from 10 (that would be 10, 9, 8, 7, and 6), now add that to the 5 fingers on your other hand and all of a sudden you have 11 fingers!!
