ask yourself is there a difference between them killing and eating dogs and us killing and eating cow/chicken/lamb/veil and any various meat sources we choose to chow down?

Dogs and cats are different than "food" animals. They are more complex creatures, and I think they have "emotions", and are bonded to people. Hell, I can't even eat chicken anymore since I adopted a rooster who wandered up to my home one day. I always thought chickens were stupid food animals....but my "Bach" has changed my mind about that. He is affectionate and I have even trained him to do tricks (stop laughing!:lol
I'm glad someone saved them...the way they were "kept" is deplorable!

A good farmer will treat his animals well, give them a good life even if he's going to kill them for food. It's called compassion. That is the real difference here, more than the fact they are dogs.

Not only that, humans should also "respect" the animals, I mean these animals feed their families, it's the least they should do.

I don't agree with the treatment and transport of the animals but see nothing wrong with people eating them. The pic above is a before and after of my buddy. I raised him from birth and had him slaughtered. His name was Cheeseburger.

Why not other animals? Cats, dogs, guinea pigs, whatever.

They have different uses. Dogs can catch birds that you shoot down with guns or bows and arrows. They can guard your house. They can take care of blind people. They are INTELLIGENT. Why the hell would anyone want to eat something like a dog? It's like a fisherman catching a fish with his fishing rod, then using his fishing rod as fire wood to cook the fish rather than go out and chop down a tree. It's nothing short of eerie and I personally find it insane to eat a dog.

I deny you the right to forbid other cultures to eat what they culturally have eaten for much longer than your country even existed.

I'd dare you to make that case to cannibals.

Who are you to decide what species of "meat" we eat is INTELLIGENT enough to NOT eat? I also personally find eating a dog insane and i'd NEVER do it, but im not ignorant enough to decide what is BEST for other CULTURES.

You got 4 flags out of this post. WTF?

People do not think anymore...duh its just meat.

A dog is a sentient being, they have an extremely wide range of human-like emotions and are not farm animals. They have been our companions for near 100 thousand years, and are more loyal to us than we have ever been to them.

These noble creatures are not for the dinner table, a real feeling person feels this in the gut almost like it is cannibalism.

You are missing the point and it seems to be one of the things that seems to be wrong with mankind at this time.

My point is that some humans are born with mental disabilities severe enough to be not as smart as even a dog or a pig.

The difference?

The uninhibited joy of life a dog will exhibit. They have empathy for when you are feeling bad, they have sorrow, shame, greed...I could go on for a long long time. Computers are smart. It is not the intelligence that makes a being a higher self being. It is the ability to feel deeply.

This is why we do not eat humans...otherwise mentally challenged humans taste just like a bacon sandwich. Now take a deep breath and think.

Ever had a sheep grown up with you from a lamb? It'll follow you around when you call its name, it will feel empathy for you when you're feeling down.. when you walk outside into your backyard it'll run up to you for a good petting. Do you care when you munch on a lamb chop? I doubt it (unless your vegetarian).

You've grown up with dogs and cats as family pets your entire lives (same as myself). I personally won't eat a cat, dog or reptile, simply because I(me,myself and Irene) think its wrong. That doesn't mean im going to judge another race/culture because they've decided they want to eat another animal different to my liking.

I'm agnostic so don't bring religion into this equation, you're making this assumption based purely from your emotional spectrum, if the entire world saw dogs as a good source of food, much like cows, pigs and sheep, this subject wouldn't have even been posted, but because they have become domesticated pets, its like your screaming bloody murder of a human being.

Too cruel, how is not eating any other animal not cruel?

A dog is a man's best friend. Once again, I need not say more and I rest my case.

Ask somebody in India to eat there cow, i bet you they won't because cow's are sacred to them, much like trying to get a Muslim to eat pork. Different people, different cultures, just because in the western world a dog is a mans best friend, doesn't mean it cannot be a delicious treat somewhere else.

I have never eaten dog, i don't plan on eating dog, but what gives you the right to say somebody else in another culture cannot?

I never said another culture cannot eat dog you idiot. Read carefully before you start putting words into other people's mouths about condemning another cultures' rights to eat tasty animals in their rights.

All I can say is my dog is dirty and deplorable losing hair because of fleas (and I am sure they don't treat for fleas when they're treating them so wrong) This dog is constantly treated, I tell you I think it would taste nasty too eat one.

I can fully appreciate the strong attachments that are created between people and their domestic pets and the ensuing reluctance to even contemplate the consumption of the meat from these animals, to many people this would seem as distasteful (pardon the pun) as cannibalism. Dogs and cats have been domesticated for millennia and can become just as much a part of a loving family unit as children themselves, that is how we were raised in most Western countries. I have had dogs in my life that I truly loved.

Our O.P. cites an incident in China where 500 dogs were "Rescued by animal lovers" enroute transportation to a slaughterhouse.

I have been living and working in Guangzhou, Guangdong, Sth.China for some time now, every time I do my shopping at one of the many "wet markets" I see both boiled and raw headless carcasses of dogs hanging up waiting for the many eager customers to select their cuts. At first I felt a little uneasy at these displays, now I am well used to it. I did mention my "concern" (for want of a more polite way of addressing the situation) to a gathering of Chinese people on the subject of eating dogs, their response was to the effect of "Do not worry, they are are not nice dogs (meaning, I think, pets) they are bred for this purpose".

The Cantonese people of Sth.China favour dog-meat in the colder months for, it is said, it "warms" the blood. There are numerous, expensive restaurants that specialise in the preparation and serving of dog-meat in a vast array of dishes. I myself, without knowing the type of meat included at the time, ate two large bowls of dog soup. When I became aware of the fact that I had just consumed dog-meat I must admit that I felt a tad sad, but I must also admit that the soup was most delectable, thus the ordering of a second bowl.

Wealthy Chinese people (and there are many here I can assure you) will often have a dog as a domestic pet, I must remark on how well these pets are cared for, so much so it borders on them being spoilt. I have noticed the expensive cost of pet products in supermarkets and pet stores here and it is obvious that only those on a high income can afford the pleasure of a dog as a pet.

I invited a group of Chinese colleagues to dinner at an Italian restaurant here in Guangzhou, I ordered some beautifully creamy blue-vein cheese to compliment the bottles of robust red wine, my guests sampled the cheese and then politely declined further offers, to them the taste, smell and idea of eating mould was quite disgusting. I have received looks of shock from Chinese people when I have explained how fond I am of kangaroo meat and how much I miss it, they ask me how I can eat such a "cute" animal.

I will often purchase light snacks from one of the many street-food vendors here, such as small spiced kebabs cooked over coals or beef-ball and vegetable soup. I always ask, in Cantonese, if it is "Neuro" (Beef), I am always answered "Dway, Dway" (Yes, Yes), I consume these with great relish as they are very palatable. The fact of the matter is that they may be made from dog, cat or rat, I simply do not know. I have had many such light meals on a day to day basis and have never had the slightest negative reaction.

The consumption of dog and cat meat is not against the law in China.

The condition of stray animals here is most appalling and tears have welled in the corner of my eyes at the sight of some of these unfortunate creatures and I obviously can not afford to buy and toss them (for I refuse to come close to these diseased animals) some meat on a daily basis.

I am very curious as to the eventual fate of the 500 dogs that were "rescued" (I can only conclude that this implies "stolen" thus depriving some person or persons of much needed income to support their extended family) by "animal lovers" (did these "lovers" then take the heavy financial responsibility to provide shelter, food, medical care and love to these 500 dogs?) and in what condition and where these dogs are now? I find it difficult to accept that they were all adopted into wealthy, kind, loving environments.

I feel that it is most improper for one culture to judge another culture's preferences, regardless of what they may be, and in this particular case, surely the Vietnamese, Chinese and indeed anyone has the right to consume the meat of any animal that the law of that person's land allows without being labelled "uncivilised".

Regards,
Jarrah.

You said a "Mans" best friend did you not? So correct me if i'm wrong but you don't consider people of other cultures to be part of "Man"?
