While these folks in Colorado scratch their heads and wonder if aliens visited their neighborhood, I figured I’d address the fantastical, magical, erotic world of garage door opener frequencies.

Mystery Signal Kills Garage Doors


Garage door openers use a frequency range of 300-400 MHz. The transmitters and receivers use rolling code technology, which means the frequencies are sent in a specific programmed order. Like your email password, only the right order of frequencies in that 100 hz range will open the door.
This is for your saftey.

However, new garage door openers use only 315 MHz. Since 2005, new garage doors use the 315 MHz frequency range to avoid interference from the Land Mobile Radio System (LMRS) used by the US military which drifts in and out of the 100hz interference window of the older “rolling code” garage door systems.

The LMRS is the US Dept. Of Defense’s new shiny communication system, it’s extremely powerful, and chances are if you have bizarre garage door problems like these folks in Colorado - it’s likely due to this type of interference. It operates *powerfully* on a rolling bandwith of frequencies 390hz and below that apparently just devastate part 15 devices (interfere with remote control devices and such):

I don't have to worry about the government messing with my garage door signal, my niece already took care of that for them.

Me two mine are both hand operated....what's wrong with a little exercise....?

As an engineer we always look at MTBF or Mean Time Between Failures....the way to escalate that failure rate is by adding more complexity as in more stuff to break.

Our power outage last fall revealed the virtues to owning an old fashioned push/pull garage door.

We have become soooo complacent....that we need a button for everything now days....

As soon as they installed my "Smart Meter" at my home.

My garage door opener will not open on many mornings.

It seems something is interfering with it.

I think it's the meter...But I have zero proof.

Im sorry but you are wrong....
The closest base to that neighborhood is Buckley AFB....30 + min away. I lived ON Buckley so I know the area well. I know of a number of people who live on Buckley right now and they are not having this issue.

So, nope, not related to the military......or else the homes on base would be having the issue...

An ungrounded lighting display may pick up an AM station, but won't knock out power to a whole block. It's proximity to any military base would be factored in - just like any *major* military operations that need a lot of attention. Colorado was visited by Obama last sept to consider, among other things:

Read up on the LMRS and it's effects on Part 15 devices, then offer up another alternative as to why frequency specific electronics all - in unison - overload and fry.
