NASA Issues Call for Visionary Advanced Technology Concepts

NASA is requesting submissions for advanced-concept space exploration technologies.

"NIAC is a forward-looking program that captures what's great about America's space program," said Michael Gazarik, director of NASA's Space Technology Program at the agency's headquarters in Washington. "NASA is looking for futuristic concepts that may enable leaps forward in how we work in and explore the space frontier. Equally important, we're asking for ideas from all sources: American citizen-inventors or educators working out of their garage to the visionary small business owners fueling our nation's economy."

If I read it correctly, I think those selected get $100,000 a year to develop their technology.

Does anyone know of any field-based levitation/launching, and faster-than-light travel concepts that have been submitted (or will soon be submitted) to this NASA Innovative Advanced Concepts (NIAC) program?

That amount of cash wont finance a single project manager, go for it!

if nasa isnt sending people in orbit no more, why the hell are they still operating????

I guess they are running out of ideas?

NASA are just casting a line out there, with some tasty bait,

Just in case someone has thought of a multi trillion dollar idea,

That they are going to give to NASA for a measly $100,000 a year........

They should look more into using electricity to make a gravity distortion,

But they need to develop a cheap, sustainable energy source,

They should send a load of solar panel's into space,

And secure a tether, fixed to the earth- made of Graphene,

Then develop a cold fusion reactor in space, and build a huge craft around it, ferrying materials up the elevator, on the tether.

All ideas already floating about, they should just get on it

Serious technological advances through the ages have been made mainly from 2 sources. One, as a by product of military advances / technology. Two, through people sat at home / in their workshop / shed / etc tinkering around and having ideas that are either stolen or "appropriated" by people such as NASA.

Perhaps this is nothing more than a call to arms for all the worlds amateur engineers and thinkers to get back at it? You know, have a really good think, let us know and if it is viable we will help with further research.

I personally think it is a great idea and shouldn't just be limited to the space programme but expanded into most walks of life. I bet a bored bloke sat in his shed could come up with all sorts of great ideas and tech for the entertainment industry for example!

What a pile of bunk, they know the US military makes and uses UFOs such as the flying triangles, and the boomerang types, if nasa was more than just a dog and pony show they would be using those too.

That and other reasons made me reluctant to react to their program.

So I will post one here, the rest I keep for myself.
We all know that zero gravity environment is not good for the astronauts bone density.
Some know there has recently a medicine discovered that seems to counteract this.
No one knows what the long term effects will be, so we don't know or this will be the golden solution.

If the medicine is not good, here is my idea.
Most people know that we have osteoclasts and osteoblasts in the bone.
Osteoclast brake down the bone and osteoblast build the bone structure up again.
This is a continues process.
Most doctors think that it is the mechanical pressure on the bone that controls this process. Apart from genetics, hormones, Vit d and calcium levels and such.
This is partially right.

Few people know that living bone tissue is piezo electric.
That makes living bone a lot stronger than dead bone tissue.
Compression of a bone, during exercise, generates electrical field lines in the bone.
Those electrical field lines control the activity of osteoclast and osteoblasts.

So, instead of rigorous exercise aboard the ISS, do the following.

Place electrodes under the feet and up the shoulders of the astronaut ( and several other places).
Put some slow pulses on them, going steep up and slow down, like a reversed saw-tooth signal.
Low voltage and in the micro to milliamp range.

Problem solved.
It can of course be used on earth, to correct bone deformities. In that case one has to use more and smaller
electrodes to get a good control over the process.

well its open only to americans so us foreigners can keep their ideas in their head and if i was an american with an idea worth nasa giving me 100k then its going to be worth alot more than that if it can be properly commercialised

Isn't that a bit stupid. we have an ISS, International Space Station, and Nasa wants to use only American idea's??? Isolationism is plain stupid.
Beside that the 100 grand is a max, and to be used to work out the idea.
The original inventor get's to keep the rights, although there where a lot of rules.

Nasa has been choked by paper and rules from the inside and now they even bring it to the outnside.
First, take a look at the value of that stack of rules: remember the Hubble mirror mistake and others.
Second if you want original idea's you must attract original minds.
Coming up with a bunch of rules and paper, even worse than their former effort to attract idea's, is rather counter productive.

Oh, goody! Hey, NASA, get your hands on some of the mysterious triangles that the military has been using for the last 20 years+. Ya'al won't need, ever, another rocket plane to travel off the Earth's surface. The black budgets have paid for them already! But then, NASA, that would fairly well put you outta business, right? And yeah, there is that phony facade that must be maintained with building conventional planes and rockets to keep what is left of America's aerospace industries alive.

Still, it you wanna keep my suggestion secret but use it anyway, I can easily provide my bank routing number so you can slip the prize money into my account. Just slip it to me. The NSA has all of my banking data.
