Now I've just recently heard about this MMOFPS (massive multiplayer online first person shooter) game that is speculated to be released in quarter 2 of 2012 from Sony Entertainment.

Apparently this game is a massive ongoing war on a massive continent where opposing factions constantly shift the balance of power..

Planetside 2 Website

Word on the street is this game will not be subscription based and therefore free to play and as far as I know is cross platform.

I remember hearing something about EVE doing similar.

They seriously need a full on war game. I could play general, or a grunt, or a fighter pilot or a sub commander...talk about massive

I guess they are taking applications for the Beta as we speak.

The original Planetside was awesome. But the company Sony of back then, is not the Sony of today and I'd hate to beat a dead horse, but I'd have to wait to reserve judgment until its out. I've been burned too many times by Sony and other newer MMOs to hold my breath. But my fingers are crossed for it!! lol

This is pretty well as massive as it gets for now.. Which is far more massive than say BF3.

Well, the beta for this game has been out for about 2 months. You can basically pre-buy the game and get in on the beta. The $40 it costs you is fully transferable to the Alpha, which is due to be available by December 2012...

The beta started out very shaky, as there were many changes, and a lot of crashes. Within the last 2 weeks, however.... I will say this... This game is absolutely awesome. They have pulled it off, and it IS the most exciting, and visually stimulating online game ever made. The technical feat that these engineers have pulled off is mind boggling.
The world in which you play is massive, and hundreds can play simultaneously. It enables real war strategy, like never before and the action will keep you glued to your PC.

It is so good in fact, it is dangerous. The simulation, vehicles, weapons, roles and options for elevating the powers of your character are orchestrated with incredible attention to detail and solidly integrated. This could be the end of your free time. You just have to see this to believe it.

Well I'm glad to see a beta tester in here..

I'm even more glad at the rave reviews, not to mention all the awards it's winning...

I foresee a new breed of MMO coming to life in this one.. Super exciting.

Looks like I might have to stop fooling around on Day Z and preorder this, I wasn't all that impressed with PS1 I'm guessing my expectations were far too high.. Thank you for your insight, I'm going to go check out the site later today and possibly preorder.

As a side note, you are going to need some decent hardware. With what is going on in this game, you just cannot have a good enough machine, however if you are an avid gamer like myself, you probably already have that covered.

With mediocre hardware , the game is still playable, as you can throttle down the options and still have a real good experience. The price of hardware today is really cheap for what you get, so do not cheat yourself for that extra $200-$300 that this game will suck up like a straw. It is a whole new experience, for sure.

Also I am curious as to whether there are any RPG elements to ps2 as in chr development, or is it pure unlocks?

thx in advance

The unlocks are based on earned credits, certifications, experience points and some are based on "Station Cash" , which is a monetary based system that basically lets you buy anything. (clever)

I'm currently in the Planetside 2 beta.

In terms of the gameplay, it's definitely decent but I can't say that it's anything special.

So far it basically feels like Battlefield 3. The only thing it has going for it over BF3, imho, is the HUGE and persistent map. Aside from that, whenever I play it I really just feel like I want to go play BF3 instead.

As far as hardware necessary, i've seen people complaining of poor framerate in chat.
Comments like "wow this game has such poor FPS for how bad it looks."
The game certainly isn't BEAUTIFUL but that fact doesn't really get in the way of gameplay.
I have no problems whatsoever with everything maxed, but that's on a watercooled highly overclocked i5 2500k, GTX 670 w/ 8gb ram, so I couldn't say how it would perform on something with a bit less power, like a GTX 460 or other older gen card.

Excuse me if I am wrong, but from the comment, it seems like you have not been in the beta very long. It takes a while to understand it's architecture. Play on the weekend to realize the depth of the game.

Oh I definitely understand the architecture.
I've played in the beta a while, and played Planetside 1 into the ground.
I'm well aware of how to build up my character and how to play the objectives.

All I'm saying is that the game, imho, really isn't anything special. Planetside 1 was good, but Planetside 2, due to the current times and other current games out, doesn't feel like anything new and doesn't really do much to keep me wanting to play it.

Again, that's all me and I suggest others try it if they get a chance.

I prefer BF3 for a large scale online FPS.

Quad i5 2500k OC 4.2 ghz

Hope my specs are good enough.

So far I can play any game I throw at it maxed out so... We'll see.

first impression;

Don't try and play this while drinking, I became instantly lost, overwhelmed and disoriented, tried again the next day sober.

I'm still not sure what exactly I should be doing, I've captured a few spots, killed a few people died a few times, guessing I'm doing it right? ha. My best kill so far, ran up on two guys, killed one got the other with the nade while I ran away to reload

I could use a better rig, I get weird sound glitch sometimes. Also seems that the graphics could be a lil better even tho I have it maxed out, it runs rather smooth but the graphics aren't as sexy as I expected, guessing I need a beastly desktop instead of playing on this laptop.

Any hooooooo.

ps: I'm Komonazmuk on there too, whatever the US east server is.
