Iran Wants to Defuse Crisis with West

Call for talks, split the opposition, buy more time - we have seen it a hundred times before - discussing any of this is completely pointless unless you address the belief system of the ruling Mullahs.

In recent months, many Iranian clerics have issued statements of admiration for Khamenei, calling him the deputy of the last Islamic messiah, Mahdi, the Shiites' 12th Imam, and even going so far as announcing that disobeying the supreme leader is equivalent to "apostasy from God."

According to Shiite belief, Mahdi will reappear after great world chaos and destruction, and Islam will rule the world. One prominent ayatollah, Mesbah Yazdi, one of Iran's leading advocates of Islamic end times' ideology, has stated that Khamenei ascends to the sky every year for five hours to meet with Imam Mahdi and to consult about what action to take next. It is said that Khamenei has been told by Imam Mahdi to continue full speed with the Iranian nuclear program and not to fear anyone or any threats.

That fanatical belief could become a self-fulfilling prophecy should Revolutionary Guard forces launch a nuclear attack against Israel. Iranian leaders have often stated their goal is to destroy the Jewish state. The radicals ruling Iran believe that Khamenei is the mythical figure who will pave the way for the Mahdi's return. They believe the current uprisings in the Middle East -- as they call it, an "Islamic awakening" -- are another sign that the end is near and that Khamenei is on a righteous path for the final destruction of Israel, America and the infidels.

The only strategy that makes a lick of sense from the standpoint of the mullahs is to draw the infidel powers into a nuclear shooting match in which they knock each other off the chessboard - Israel nuking the Sunni Arab armies would be a great help as well.

Iran's president is a psychopath. He wants to bring on armaggeddon in the hopes to invoke Mahdi, the tweleth Imam. He's kookoo for coco puffs. That is why Iran should not have nuclear technology; to prevent Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's pyschopathic trip of worldwide destruction.

If the Shah was not removed in the 70's we may not be in this mess now. Just an opinon.

I am more worried about the clerics in power. I'll never forget the story during the 80's Iran-Iraq war where the Iranians sent their own children, school classes full, into minefields to sweep them.They gave them a plastic key imported fromTaiwan to the children to get them a pass into heaven.They sent their own children, probably their own mother into combat to become a martyr for their country.Not a good idea letting them become nuclear.Israel had the opportunity to use nukes during Yom kippoer but didn't when they had a hard time fighting that war.
I also think this to buy them time, its North Korea all over again.And the Russians know it, if they really want to help them making peaceful nuclear energy the'd helped them building thorium reactors instead of these ones.

I do agree with your Thorium reactor though. Every country should be using them. I don't see a problem, nor do I want to be hypocritical, and say they cannot have nuclear power. If they use it to build nuclear weapons, why not? How many countries have them that don't agree with or adopt a "western" viewpoint? If this stops any more countries from invading them, by them using it as a deterrent, why not? Unfortunately, this will most likely cause the bullies to invade them, or bomb them as they did Iraq.

So you pick just one account of this happening.........and then dismiss it because the guy who reported it didn't have the PHD he claimed. This is a well attested story - the bassiji themselves revel in it!

Sayyad Shirazi was appointed as the commander of the regime's ground forces in 1981. In that post, he purged the regular armed forces of its patriotic personnel, ordering the arrest, execution and dismissal of many of them. He was also among key officials responsible for sending thousands of young Iranians to run over mine fields during the Iran-Iraq war. He was also responsible for the massacre of hundreds of Mojahedin in western Iran.
