An animal rights group wants Illinois to install highway signs in memory of cattle that died when trucks hauling them flipped in two separate wrecks.

Don't get me wrong, I love animals.....but really?

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals wants to buy the markers, one in suburban Chicago and one northwest of Peoria. PETA's Dec. 15 request to the Illinois Department of Transportation contends the signs would pay tribute to the more than 20 head of cattle killed as a result of negligent driving in Illinois in 2011.

20 cattle? How many cattle (and other animals) are killed each year on the roads in the world?
Should we build a memorial for the rabbits, dogs, and other animals too?

The request likely will be denied, IDOT spokesman Josh Kauffman said. The state's Roadside Memorial Act specifies that only relatives who lost loved ones in highway crashes may request memorials, he said.

PETA campaign coordinator Tracy Patton, of Arlington Heights, who wrote the letter seeking the markers, wants the department to disregard that requirement.

Maybe someone loved the cows that were lost?

"Because there are no surviving family members for animals in the meat trade, we ask that you waive this requirement of the program and allow concerned Illinois citizens like me to apply in lieu of a relative," she wrote.

Ummmm....there probably are suviving family members of those animals.

Virginia and Illinois are the only states where PETA has attempted these campaigns so far, Byrne said.

"Cows are intelligent, sensitive animals who feel pain the same way we do," Byrne said. Livestock transported for slaughter endure extreme weather, hunger and thirst, she said. If they are hurt in an accident, their suffering can be prolonged.

Highway crashes involving livestock can be horrific. Cattle plummeted from an overpass in May when a truck overturned on Interstate 80 near Hazel Crest. The roadside markers envisioned by PETA would memorialize 16 animals killed in that accident and six killed in October on Interstate 74 about 40 miles northwest of Peoria. No humans died in the wrecks.

Several years ago my family had one of our horses killed by a truck.

My daughter absolutely loved that horse, but we didn't build a memorial
on the side of the road for her.
Can you imagine all the signs put up for every animal that died in the world?

I love animals. Without them the human race wouldn't be here, but if you must
build a memorial for them, just make one really nice one somewhere that's for all of them
....not just the cows.

PETA's ideas make no sense to me.

RIP steak I had last night.

that's essentially what we should be doing for every cow then by their logic.

This is what happens when you have way too much time and money on your hands. And all the other good ideas have already been used.

I dare say, they'll soon set up little chapels for formal funerals for road kill. As an afterthought, maybe I'll start picking up roadkill, and sending it to PETA's headquarters....Send them all C.O.D. let's see how long they keep accepting those suckers....

Don't get me wrong, i LOVE animals,. animal cruelty is the worst thing ever.

But cattle - they were probably on the way to steaks anyway? I don't "like" that 20 cattle died...but making a memorial for them is a little weird ...

What's the inscription? "The poor cattle died prematurely on the way to the slaughterhouse." ?

Exactly what I was thinking. It seems like there's a lot more productive things they could be doing to protect the animals that actually require it.

This comes from the same group to compare commerical chicken processing to the World War II deaths of millions of human beings...and the fur trade to mass murder. This doesn't surprise me..it just leaves me sad. We have misery among our citizens...and by the millions right now..and the best these fruit loops can do is cry for a cow. Oh brother. If they ever have reason to wonder why people laugh AT them and never WITH them, they need only look at things like this. They are laughed AT because it just isn't illegal to be this stupid yet, so it's all we can do.

Meanwhile..I'll ask my wife to buy us steaks for New Years, after reading this. I shall eat one of my steaks in their honor. Every bit shall be in the memory of one of their precious cows. After all, it was an enormous supply of more beef that never made it to market. Now there IS something to feel bad about.

I hope when staunch PETA members pass over rainbow bridge...they are led through the pearly gates to that big restaurant in the sky, handed a menu, and the only thing on it is steak.....

I would love to see a sign like this:

"Here lies Frank. He was a good squirrel but unfortunately not quick enough."

RIP Frank!

If people are allowed to put up a sign for every animal they lost, you won't be able to see the important road signs anywhere. Sure I feel for the animals but if you do it for these cows, expect everyone who's pet was a member of the family to want a sign.

I would like to see one like this...

"Here lies Stripes. He was a sweet little skunk, and a real stinker. RIP Stripes....your memory lingers longer than you did."

Why stop with just the animals?
Are the insects killed by car windshields less important?

What if someone drives in the grass? The plants that could have been killed were alive too?

"Cows are intelligent, sensitive animals who feel pain the same way we do," Byrne said.

Have these folks ever been close to a live cow? Cows and chickens are dumb as a rock (my apologies to rocks). Pigs are intelligent, horses are intelligent, mules are intelligent, heck, goats are sort of intelligent. but cows don't have good walking around sense.

Of course, come to think of it, maybe he's speaking relative to the intelligence level of PETA... that might be true.

I think a better memorial would be to use that money to sit down in a nice steakhouse and chew on a ribeye. A little protein might do these people some good.

Okey then, let's put a taxidermy-stuff cow on a pedestal at every place where a cow has been hit. On the other side of the road, in stark contrast, let us put the wreaked remains of the vehicle that knowing, we must suppose, killed itself hitting the cow--thus, the reason for a mounment for the cow, we must suppose.

I also wish to point out that this is cow sexism! What about the dead bulls? This "cows" only business is like putting up a monument to every woman driver or pedestiran that wandered down her side of the road or on to it and is completely forgetting the men that killed themselves trying to avoid the woman's bad driving or choice of place to cross the road. This whole thing is PETA's fault. Could PETA be run by a bunch of cows?

(Psst. Don't attempt to answer that last hypothetical question. I'm in enough trouble, you don't need to join me.)

Here I go getting in trouble again....my PETA joke of the day...

How many steps does it take a peta member to walk a dog ?

Two:

1. To unhook the dog from the leash.

2. Then watch the dog run into a busy street.

This seems like it might be a fitting line on a headstone -

If they are looking for something more individualized, then how about this -
Option 1

1. Marinated London Broil

London Broil is the recipe that became synonymous with the cut of beef. Marinated with garlic, wine, and vinegar, this is a traditional London Broil. To get the flavor authentic you will want charcoal, but a good gas grill will do the job just as well. This is a thick cut of steak, large enough to feed two, so check the internal temperature and make sure you get it cooked through to the middle.

Option 2

Carne Asada

Take a skirt steak, marinated with Tequila, lime juice, herbs and spices, and thrown on a hot grill. Carne Asada is a traditional dish, and as such there are many ways to prepare this dish. What they all have in common is a tough cut of beef, a powerful marinade, and a hot fire. Carne Asada is perfect for a charcoal fire and needs that kiss of smoke to make it truly authentic.

Option 3

Peppered New York Strip Steak

Lee Custer sent me this recipe for a spiced up a New York Strip Steak. The secret is to use cracked peppercorns, not ground. That solid pepper flavor is what makes this steak so flavorful. While this recipe calls for 1/4 cup of black pepper it isn't that spicy. The pepper becomes a crust that flakes off during grilling, but holds in flavor and juices.

PETA jokes -
How many vegans does it take to change a lightbulb?
Two, one to change it and one to check for animal ingredients.

What do you call a militant vegan?
Lactose intolerant.

What did one vegetarian spy say to the other vegetarian spy?
We have to stop meating like this.
Can vegetarians eat animal crackers?

Seen on a message board
I follow a strict vegan diet. I eat only vegans.

...guess that sealed you being taken off the PETA Christmas card list...

The way I see it...PETA won't be happy until we're all cannibals.

No im still on it.. Of course the PETA that sends me the cards stands for People Eating Tasty Animals, and not the others.

Also, PETA really doesn't want people turning into cannibals, simply because when it comes to that, they are going to be the first to get test out the human version of a London Broil. Of course the argument could also be made that since PETA is, well, PETA, eating them would be akin to eating vegetables, which essentially is what they are if we use their intelligence level and thought process as an indicator (this is sarcasm so for those who might be offended dont get your broccoli all in knot).
