THE Australian Defence Force is exploiting forced cutbacks in military spending in Britain and other Western countries, embarking on an unprecedented drive to recruit laid-off soldiers, sailors and air crew.

Defence, which has struggled to fill recruitment quotas in the face of increasing competition from the lucrative private sector, is seeking highly skilled specialists such as fighter pilots, special forces officers and submarine crews. And as an incentive, it is prepared to offer a fast track to Australian citizenship for so-called "lateral recruits" after just three months' service.

I did a search and did not see this posted...but I never seem to find anything when doing a search. If this has been posted I offer my apologies and ask that you point me to the thread.

With that being said I would like to get some opinions from you guys. As a Veteran separated from Uncle Sam's Misguided Children (USMC) for 2 years now I am particularly interested in the opinions of the Veterans on this site.

I personally don't see a problem and would consider this as long as I could maintain dual citizenship. With the way things are going in this country, it may not be a bad idea.

Thoughts and opinions please.

having did 4 tours in vietnam with s.o.g when was young and stupid.
Not worth it to throw ones life away fighting wars of profit for the bastards. never again doesnt matter what or how damn much they offer they can go to hell let them go fight if they're so damn eager for war. not a damn one of them worth fighting or dying for.

I reckon it opens the doorway to new experiences and fresh beginnings; and there is certainly appeal to that. The question I would be inclined to ask is what I forfeit now and ten years from now pursuant to a position with the Oz military/defense? Can I be certain I will be doing what I enjoy? Will I advance in knowledge, training, and skills for the future beyond military/defense service?

Maybe it's just me, but my urge to travel the world and experience everything under the sun has greatly waxed thin. But beyond that digression I don't perceive anything inherently wrong-minded with the prospect. Every decision need not reduce to a marginal analysis (as I seem to be implying), but I would nonetheless give due consideration to long term goals/ambitions before jumping onboard with this opportunity.

The Australian and New Zealand Armed Forces have been recruiting 'ex' British Forces personnel for many years. Every month in the RNs Navy News, you will see advertisements to join the RAN and RNZN and also some for the Gulf States. Nothing new here.

I was actually unaware of that. Seems that recruiting from the USA might be new.

I would have to agree that you must heavily weigh the risks vs benefits before jumping in to fight for another country.

Might be a good opportunity for some though.

I know a few guys that used this option to emigrate to a better climate, non as I know have regreted it. Most have actually completed their time and are now regular citizens with normal jobs and loving life.

It is not such a big deal 'fighting for another country' for any ex British Forces as they would be joining a British Commonwealth Countrys armed forces, the allegiance is still the same. A little different however if joining any other countrys armed forces though the UK does have a history of personnel joining Gulf states such as Oman and other ex-empire countrys.
