The letter J is pronounced as it is in English, in German it is pronounced as Y. When the German translators of the Bible wrote it as J, pronouncing it as Y, they were linguistically correct. When the English readers read the J, they assumed it was J as we pronounce it now.

I have read the Wycliffe Bible and compared it to the King James, and the meanings are exactly the same, even though the 300 year-older Wycliffe uses words known to those English speakers, because the English was based in French, German and Latin. For instance, the Wycliffe Bible uses the word clepped, and if we read that we do not use it in English, but the word means called in German usage at the time.

English itself as we speak today is relatively young compared to other languages. People think the translators of the King James Bible just mistranslated, that is not the case because many words we use today have found singular meaning in our current English. That does not mean the word is mistranslated, it means the reader is basing the interpretation on today's English.

Honest question

Think about this though, was Christianity part of the pop culture in the Roman Empire? In a land full of magick, paganism, polytheism and worship of the emperor, Christianity was so different that it changed the Roman Empire completely and the rest of the world. I don't see any other religion having that impact. People may say, "what about Islam?" but Islam came 600 years after Christianity and the world was changed by that time.

The thought becomes this, does Harry Potter have any kind of power such as that? It is simply pop culture, the same as life was in the Roman Empire. We have faith in more than the Book, we have faith in the authorship of the Book. Rowlings will be forgotten in a few years, her book series will be forgotten when the next big thing comes along.

And there is a Church of Elvis, so people will make a religion from anything. The biggest difference is this, would people be willing to die for Harry Potter?

Thats my question. It seems to me Harry Potter has the same potential to catch on as a fad religon as did the bible.

Also, Islam like Christianity is made of primarily pagean rituals. Christian and Islam are umbrella terms for age old pagean religon. The purpose of the two were to like big business round up all the smaller sects and create a single religon for ease of control. Many of the beliefs and practices have been around for so long to date one religon older than the other is to miss the whole picture.

Maybe Harry Potter wasn't a great example, maybe we can now start praying to the interwebz. The interwebz has made just as much of an impact if not more.

We don't have faith in the book. We have faith in Jesus the Christ and were not the only YHWH based faith in the world. What you should be asking yourselves is why do we believe in God? What did the men who wrote these books see and experience to make them believe? The hebrew didn't record this book for fun, they recorded it for posterity and because he gave them laws to obey and set them apart from other men by those laws and beliefs. People in those ancient times didn't write fiction stories like what Stephen King and Terry Goodkind shell out, they wrote about what they saw with their own eyes, what they heard and what they were told because these events were important to them.

There is nothing "unconcious" about having faith, it is a very concious act. You need to stop being prejudiced and biased to something you know nothing about other than your own opinions. Youre asking the wrong questions. The question you should be asking yourself are the whys of it and why do we believe what we do but this takes an open mind i am sensing you do not have.

Wow. I am not even going to begin to point out where you are wrong. You either 18 or just a very arrogant human being.

Honest answer:

You can locate the places/cities/nations/mountains/rivers mentioned in the Bible on the map.

You can tie in the Bible with secular history and the writings of other peoples of the same era - I admit that there is quite a bit of chronological confusion, but it can be resolved.

You can see the exact outcome of Biblical prophecy in history and current events.

The Bible has made for better people for many centures.

People have been willing to die for what they know from the Bible, and joyfully at that.

None of that can be said of the Harry Potter books.

That's the answer I always hear. My exaggeration with HP was a poor example. I should of used the internet.

Still though this answer does not quench my thirst. Thanks though enjoy your holidays

Jesus Christ is the author and finisher of our faith. That means we strive to know Jesus more than just in a book. The Bible is a living Book, and only within Judaism and Christianity to we apply that term. Within Jewish Kabbala, those adherents use the pointing stick when reading the Torah, because they believe the Spirit of God is in the words and those words are too holy for man to touch and defile.

When a person believes a word to be so holy that even touching it defiles it, can you imagine then how much more reverence and respect they give to insure there is no mistranslation? But if you don't believe it is a living book, then that is your choice, but if you accept the Bible for what it says, and strive to know God through the reading of it, you can have this experience. You know, there are things that carry with it intrinsic meanings, and just by the mention of that thing, you can visualize all that surrounds it.

I will give you some objects and you will understand what I mean....

Jack Daniels whiskey

Marlboro Cigarettes

Harley Davidson motorcycles

Barny

Teletubbies

Mercedez Benz

The Bible

Big Mac

All of those things make you visualize an aspect even though those are inanimate objects. There is no power to a bottle that contains whiskey, but you know the meaning just from the image. They each carry not only a visualization, but a lifestyle involved that you have thought of within mere seconds. Now to show you intrinsic power....

The Bible

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

I won't tell you which one you picked that evoked the greatest emotion, because you know which did it. And if it evokes the greatest emotion (either respect or disrespect), then a book, which is an inanimate object, holds power over your emotions, that is power.

yeeaa no disrespect, but seeing the word bible or actually seeing the bible evokes no emotions out of me greater then curitousity. And the only reason it gives me any measurable curitousity is because so many other people will make unreasonable after unreasonable argument that this book holds some power over them.

I never needed a book to tell me how to know god. My relationship is personal one of the great mysteries since Jesus taught this amongst other things and yet people contradict his word when they read and follow such religons.

You applied the words unreasonable twice, that means your emotions have dictated to you through your understanding that anything about God goes against reason. It had enough power over you to cause you to say it twice. Curiosity is not an emotion, but the feeling of what is reasonable is either acceptable or repugnant, and those are emotion based.

You may have not had outward emotions expressed that registered with you, they were inward and they occurred in such a quick amount of time, you did not process the information until you posted on here, which is the outward expression of your inward emotions. You posted unreasonable twice, I think you find the idea that it is reasonable to believe in God is something you do not want. That is based on emotion.

And I might add, you used more emotional energy when it came to the Bible, because you did not address by name the Harry Potter book. I did not tell you which one you would choose, you chose it because it raised the most emotion in you.

Actually I have severe Dyscalculai. I have mild Dyslexia, so I have to focus a lot of energy into thinking about things, but it does not make me any less intelligent. At least I know how to use proper grammar.

I see my above post went above your head, perhaps you should find someone to help you with it?
