Local Cops Ready for War With Homeland Security-Funded Military Weapons

www.thedailybeast.c om

A decade of billions in spending in the name of homeland security has armed local police departments with military-style equipment and a new commando mentality. But has it gone too far?

Every city squad car is equipped today with a military-style assault rifle, and officers can don Kevlar helmets able to withstand incoming fire from battlefield-grade ammunition. And for that epic confrontation if it ever occurs officers can now summon a new $256,643 armored truck, complete with a rotating turret

It's getting kind of ridiculous. I completely understand the need for police to be able to counter an increasingly armed criminal element, but the problem is that this "arms race" between law enforcement and criminals has been spilling over into escalated violence against citizens who are not omitting any felonies.

Personally, I think the running street battles with the likes of the Black Panthers and SLA of the 1960's...imagined with modern weaponry and attitudes...should be enough to justify much of the hardware Police are being issued. The problem isn't the set of tools they carry, it's the competence of the professional using them. We have GOT to focus on better and more realistic policing with capable men as cops...not wiry kids out fresh out of all the life experience COLLEGE could give them, and ready to face the world and kick some butts.

Recruit the vets who have nothing left to prove to the world and fully understand what a .223 fired in a residential neighborhood is capable of doing without reading books on theory to learn. Just my opinion.

I'm pretty sure this is only happening in the bigger cities (IE. Midland, East, and West coasts) of the states. I cant see the cops here in Bettendorf, IA where the population is 30,000 driving around in miniature tanks because John the hobo decided to rob the Gyro stand downtown
. Even our neighbor town (Davenport, IA Population:100,000) would not need any new upgrades to there department. It seems like a huge waste of tax money.. What else is new though.

ETA: Then again the Rock Island Arsenal is right across the Mississippi from us. They wouldn't really need anymore equipment.

Not all feel this way, but some do, and it is the ones that call the shots that get toys.

Worked real well in Greece.

Mobs of anarchists supported by the communists burn one or two of those baby tanks every day over there.

Make them. Get people to destroy or ruin them. sell more. =profit.

Are you kidding me or what? Everytime some bizarre isolated incident happens the government(local, state, federal) use it as an excuse to ask for more expensive hardware and more funds to be devoted to future hypothetical conflicts.

That means money that could be going to other much more needy causes goes to those pricks with an attitude problem. The law does'nt even protect the citizens anymore, it just exists to keep the PTB safe and provide jobs for people with no skill set. It also exists to collect fines for various small offenses called misdemeanors. How many statues exist and how many actually make sense???

This is hypocrisy at its finest. It is the american overkill mentality. Lets put it this way, you don't need township police and you don't even need a sheriff. State and federal police is more than adequate. Go to any country you want that isn't a military dictatorship and you will see how little resources the police get. Only in america do they need armored cars and rifles and so much BULL# REDUNDANCY while social services get cut and other meaningful projects take a back seat!

1. Using a 40 year old situation as a reason to bring battlefield arms to civilian neighborhoods is just plain ignorant.

2. The entire LEO infrastructure is fractured.
It is in worse condition than our federal government.

3. untrained officers are the biggest problem.
It's now considered okay to use physical violence at a cops discretion.(taste a taser lately?).. That's unamerican, and inhumane.

Cops spend time at the range, the best equipment, and everytime they fire their weapons they empty clips like scared schoolgirls.
Public safety becomes secondary.
The training they recieve is bogus and ineffective.......... or this would not happen again and again and again.

Yeah the phoney war on drugs to complement the greatly blown out of porportion war on terror. Some people get rich promoting conflicts(bankers and industrialists) while not even allowing the officials who care do a good job.

Do you know anything about Operation Fast and Furious, where the federal government got caught buying weapons from FFL dealers and then selling them to mexican gangs hellbent on controlling the drug trade? Maybe some rich sobs in america and mexico are financing it and deriving profits by choking the supply and selling very high? Maybe both the american and mexican government is involved so deep that no rational person would believe?

On top of all this bs they were trying to smear all the FFL dealers so obama could use it as an excuse to come down harder on the second amendment by bringing more restrictions on everyone and probably increasing taxes as well.
