REM and Rapid Heart Rate during meditation

Hello, I wasn't sure where to put this so feel free to move it if necessary. Two days ago I was meditating and focusing on the tingling sensation rushing through my body. At the same time I was beginning to feel "light" and then this bright light-blue color encompassed my entire "field of vision", though my eyes were closed. Not long after that my eyes began moving uncontrollably and rapidly, sort of what REM looks like I would imagine. I was able to not pay much attention to the eye movement and eventually I felt like I saw through the blue. Now, who knows what the next part really was, but I swear I saw the Earth from the vantage point of standing on the moon. The moon was huge, and so was the Earth, but both were very clearly encompassing my field of vision. Next I just opened my eyes and my heart was beating like crazy. I honestly thought I was going to have a heart attack. I have been fairly athletic most of my life and worked out pretty hard many times, and I have never felt my heart beat that hard or fast. It was pretty terrifying, especially since I was alone in the apartment. Eventually my heart did calm down, but it took a long time to feel "normal" again.

My question, basically, is; Does anyone else get an increased heart rate and rapid eye movement when they are meditating/having an OBE?

Thanks

It sounds like a proper welcome is in order here. If your description is all accurate there, it sounds like you made your first venture onto the Astral Plane. I've heard of it happening inadvertently, but if that is the experience you had, that must have been something else when the nature of it all is a mystery while it's happening. See if you can get back to that state now without the physical panic reaction.

This REM and increased heart rate is usually closely followed by a vibration and then you are free to leave your body and explore the universe.

You got VERY close my friend.

As someone who has had countless OOBEs I can tell you first hand that this is what was happening.

No, mine goes really low. I had my bp checked today and it was 107 over 67. Barely alive, but I always close my eyes and meditate after a bp cuff is put on. I really believe in bio feedback.

On a side note to REM:

if you are meditating then your heart beat should be SLOWING DOWN not speeding up. REM can occur in alpha and theta states so can occur. In Thailand, the Buddhist meditation masters recommend that you pay no attention to mental phenomena, just let them arise and pass away while maintaining the "observer" position.. without the slightest mental or physical strain or struggle. When practised properly this leads to what is called "access concentration" or one-pointedness. I let you discover what happens after you attain this...

Beat me to it. Your heartrate should not have increased. You should get checked out by a doctor just to be on the safe side. Unless what you were seeing caused you excitement or anxiety.

Basically when you are meditating, your heart rate should be lower, That is part of what it is all about. So, please see a doctor, as it should drop and not increase.

So you're in good shape and meditate regular and felt rapid heart rate and fear? I know others say that should not happen but I beg to differ. Try it again and stay calm this time when your metabolic rate rises. Stay in the room, if you know what I mean. Keep waiting, you may get a visitation. Blue lite was telling, that's a good thing. You might feel short of breath, get goose bumps, feel chills up your spine. Stay there, fear not... wait_for_it.

From time to time, I do get similar sensations of rapid heartbeat and eye movements. Such usually happens when I relax enough to take small breaths, if noticeable at all. Whatever the cause may be, I found that when I began to take deep breaths, it would calm down a little.

I'm afraid I can't give any more information as I've not had an OBE or any astral projection experience -- at least none that I know of or remember -- so I can't comment on the signs. However, I would agree with everyone else that during meditation, there should be a calming effect on your body rather than one that is stimulating.

Thank you to everyone who replied. Sorry I didn't respond sooner I fell asleep soon after posting haha.

To everyone who said my heart rate should have gone down, I understand where you're coming from. The funny thing is that my heart rate was negligible right before it shot up and began pounding intensely. I do meditate on a fairly regular basis and am in good shape. Usually I tend to go into a deeply relaxed state, as I did here, but then this whole heart racing thing started to happen. To be honest I right before this happened I was at a point where I was breathing at relaxed intervals and I felt extremely relaxed all over (including my heart rate).

I think, from some of the other posts, that this was just an adverse reaction to being excited that "something" might be happening on the spiritual level. I am going to keep an eye on it and see if I can somehow get to the same "point" I was at right before I opened my eyes without getting the heart racing as well.

On a side note, the weirdest part for me was the fact that I didn't realize my heart was racing until I was almost about to open my eyes. I realized that my heart had been pounding and that the deep "thump thump thump thump" I had been feeling and hearing was actually my heart racing.

Anyway, thanks for the concerns and sound advice. I will take it all under consideration next time I meditate and feel something similar happening.

Thanks for the video haha. Honestly, every time I see the abbreviation R.E.M. without the periods I think of the band first.

Haha thanks for the warm welcome. I have read quite a bit of OBE info, but I don't think I've ever had one, and this definitely had quite a few of the markers. I think the fact that as I got deeper into the meditation I felt light and tingly and that made me start focusing on having an OBE and I think subconsciously I was probably pushing for that to happen and it made it so that it was more of an uncomfortable (though still great) experience. Also, the fact that I've tried a few times before with no success definitely made me feel shocked when the moon and the earth showed up in my field of vision, so that probably didn't help either haha.

Hi Acedrew . Its an old topic but I wonder if you figured out what was it. Similar thing happened to me Today. I was meditating and there began this shrill voice in my ears and my heart began beating like crazy and then my eyes began shivering then I began seeing solar sytems one on another. My bf called and I came to myself. I came across this top on Google, searching.
What would That be?
Hope you see and answer
