In a shift, Israeli officials are welcoming the prospect that Syria’s president, Bashar al-Assad, will be overthrown, an event Defense Minister Ehud Barak says could be weeks away.
“The Assad family, through their own behavior, have lost their last drop of legitimacy and put themselves beyond the point of no return with their brutal slaughter of their own people. He has ceased to be something relevant.”
“It might take many weeks,” Barak added, “ but it’s not a matter of months or years.”
If push came to shove I am sure Russia would put its hands in his pockets and turn around and walk away
During the night of 7 to 8 August 2008, Georgia launched a large-scale military offensive against South Ossetia, in an attempt to reclaim the territory. Georgia claimed that it was responding to attacks on its peacekeepers and villages in South Ossetia, and that Russia was moving non-peacekeeping units into the country. The Georgian attack caused casualties among Russian peacekeepers, who resisted the assault along with Ossetian militia
"A democratic transition includes more than removing the Assad regime. It means setting Syria on the path of the rule of law and protecting the universal rights of all citizens regardless of sect or ethnicity or gender," Clinton said as she began a meeting with Syrian opposition members in Geneva.
She said the opposition understood that Syrian minorities needed to be reassured that they would be better off "under a regime of tolerance and freedom."

The thing that strikes me the most about this-- I just don't get how some people think they get to decide who on this planet gets to be slaughtered, and who should not be slaughtered. Why is it legitimate for anyone to slaughter anyone, be it their own people or another people?edit on 12/14/2011 by new_here because: (no reason given)

So you see, the Russians will not backdown that easily.
Georgia was acting on behalf of the United States in these actions as Saakashvili is an American educated plant during the earlier coloured revolutions.
Also American analysts and weapons trainers were on the ground to study the Russian capabilities.
This "war", was between Russia and America but fought between their proxys.
so tell me, why you think Russia will back down, now?
