Star Ship troopers 911, the war on terror, conditioning, and propaganda

i think this has been posted in mention on ATS a couple times but not presented yet as a debate of it's own..

So the movie starship troopers (1997)



first thing i would mention is there is clearly a scene of the world trade center ( in the movie is two random buildings from the fictional city geneva ) caught on fire after being hit by the planes ( in the movie the buildings are hit by bug plasma ) ( 44secs into video posted ) ( 1min 05 secs in )

the enemies in the movie are giant bugs basically, however; throughout the movie they are refered to as 'arachnids'. arachnids, iraq. ( 3min 15secs into video )

in the movie after the bug attacks it shows some good examples of conditioning a whole response for something like an attack that in the real world would translate to a terrorist attack. ( 2mins 29secs into video )

i haven't found a video clip of this scene yet, but also in the movie a leader of some sort, who is white skinned, resigns or ends his term but he is replaced by a female who is dark skinned. possibly a condition for being ready to elect an african american president.

also throughout the movie are various references to the societies structure which is under rigorous control of it's 'citezens' and kind of orwellian.

interesting comparison on a classic.

No, the 9/11 footage is NOT in the movie, the OP even mentioned it...

The 9/11 footage was edited in to show how similar the conditioning and reactions were from the movie, and 9/11 events... by beating the war drums

my bad, i actually didn't know that, definitely don't want to claim it is actual movie footage then but that point in the theory could still work and means the same thing, as well as all my other points about the movie - at least i'm still interested in them, for me it's possible

So Robert A. Heinlein and Paul Verhoeven conspired, decades apart, to write a novel and film a take-off of the novel that would condition people to accept going to war over a terrorist attack that happened years after the film...

Why?

It wasn't enough that three thousand people died, we needed the added oomph of remembering a few scenes from Starship Troopers to push us over the edge?

I think Cracked had it right. Verhoeven traveled to the future, then returned to the past to direct a satire of a future war, making it a horrible waste of time travel.

The similarities are rather creepy. This is just another reason why I read between the lines in some new movies coming out, and just keep those thoughts in my mind. Contagion comes to mind as one to remember.

Not to take away from the topic but I have also noticed an increase in the use of "aliens" in children's shows and cartoons. Even the Nick Jr stuff. I was planning on making a thread about it, if I can find clips of the shows I am thinking about. Dora, and even Bubble Guppies, right off the top of my head.

On a lighter note, I forgot that Doogie Howser was in that movie,

I love Starship Troopers, even have a mint original 35mm Print of the original movie, all 7 reels + DTS Discs.

They are even releasing a new Starship Troopers next year from what I hear.

Interesting comparison though...

So what are you saying, that if a county is attacked by a foreign enemy that they have no right to respond? Napoleon invading Spain, the Japanese invading China, the German Luftwaffe bombing London, North Korea invading South Korea, all of that, everyone is supposed to just roll over and hope the enemy doesn't hurt them too much? Otherwise any response there could be would necessarily include "beating the war drums", and mobilizing to respond to a terrorist group that slaughtered 3000 people would be no exception.

Or are you saying everyone *except* the US has a right to self defense?

Well nothing from Starship Troopers or 911 is new from a psychological point of view.
