NTSB seeks nationwide ban on driver use of personal electronic devices

www.washingtonpost.com

The National Transportation Safety Board recommended a nationwide ban on driver use of personal electronic devices

The NTSB’s recommendations urge all 50 states and the District ”to ban the nonemergency use of portable electronic devices (other than those designed to support the driving task).” According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, 35 states, including Maryland and Virginia, and the District ban texting while driving.

My father was nearly killed when he was rear ended by a girl texting on her phone (with one arm in a cast no less) at over 70mph on the freeway. This happened in Arizona where we already have a ban on texting while driving. So obviously the law did nothing to help in this case.

Perhaps turning new cars into faraday cages with only the hands free system allowing external communications is the solution to actually stop this dangerous practice.

It is impossible to not be distracted whilst texting or on the phone. Think about it... weather its your eyes off the road for a millisecond, or your ears listening to something else other then perhaps tires screeching, face it your distracted.

hi op
recently here(uk)
the gov is proposing to ban smoking in cars (drivers)
to some extent i can understand
in the past i have been guilty of lighting a smoke and leaning forward to change the radio chanel
and even tried to look at my watch while riding a moped(wen i was 16)
i would say that here in britain cars are every where, roads are so busy
there needs to 100% concentration on the road
but then again
tell that to a person that is working 14 hrs a day and the hour drive haves u dozeing at the wheel
not blaming todays working habits
just saying...left and right

This is what we need. People can't drive so let's make a machine that drives for em'.

I don't believe in relying in legislation to control everything. However, anyone texting while driving is a complete moron. There was some woman in my town that crashed into the Christmas parade, because she was texting AND INTOXICATED while driving.
