On 1st December, 2011, the official switch-over occurred after the Operating Certificates were merged, as part of the United-Continental business
merger/stock swap business transaction.
From this source, the recordings of the last flight to use the "
Continental" radio call sign with Air Traffic Control (at Newark Airport, in
this instance) was Flight 86 "heavy", a Boeing 777-224 from Shanghai, China. (ZSPD)
(The "heavy" in the call sign is added for all jets capable of weights of 250,000 pounds or more).
