In reading the article, the girls description makes it sound more like a tattoo, than a simple mark on the hand.

Very disturbing indeed.

If the police where to use high power UV lights at night they would be able to identify the protesters, and target them as repeat ofenders. Scary thought.

lulz..now my idea of the worst possible useage of this ink came true...und when i told my parents that they have this ink in the netherlands and some parts of germany and they will use it also to mark protesters they said i am (again) just nuts...

conspiracy theorists ftw because everything is possible and the craziest things will mostly happen =(

now we need no tin-foil hats - we need:

*edit* what are the rules to get an image directly shown and not as a link???

guess theres limits on what they're willing to do for the cause ..

if your going to be out protesting and playing wanna be revolutionary then you better be prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice for your cause.. Which from what see ows isnt and is yet one more reason why ows will fail..

so what they got a little inkstamp on them. in some countries people get a bullet in the head for protesting.
the ows lot is very lucky the police play nice over there.

Ever been to a theme park and needed to run out to your car to get something? Did they not stamp your hand with ink that would only show up when you stuck it under the black light to re-enter? It may be bad form on the part of the police but nothing that should get your underwear in a bunch. Now that we know about it, it is not that hard to wash off.
You're comparing a theme park hand stamp to unsolicited marking of public citizen protesters via use of a long lasting chemical agent? What a skewed and slanted comparison...

To secretly mark a persons skin with a chemical agent that could have health risks for the purpose of identifying protesters

Depends on the chemical. My daughter and I get marked every time I go to Chuck E Cheese and it has never harmed us.

It is a childrens place with games and for birthday parties. I hardly think the health risks are great. It uses ultra violet light to match us up upon leaving as a security feature so no children get abducted.

Doesn't that sound a little historically familiar?

It does, and at least those politically "unfavorable s" knew they were wearing that mark. I'd be less worried about the chemical (this IS Montreal Canada remember) and more worried about the reasoning behind stealthy tagging of protestors.

I'd assume the justification would be so protesters already dealt with can't slip back in pretending to be press or what not.

I recall years back protests where simply having a Ron Paul sticker on your backpack was enough for the police to move you away.

You're right, they use it for a lot of things. I went to visit a prison and they mark the back of your hand with a "V" in this ink so that they know you're a visitor when it's time to leave. I wouldn't bash the cops for this, it's no different than chalking a tire wall to indicate that you're cruising in a section of street where cruising isn't allowed to alleviate traffic.

Using the UV ink they can identify those who have been arrested already, and handle the second arrest as appropriate. It's not to target them like nazis or anything, it's just an aide in administration and efficiency in a tough time.

But, don't let reality get in the way of a good conspiracy theory right?

Yes and yes, but that ink washes off very easily and they aren't forcing it on you covertly.

Actually they are. No hand stamp, no entry.

Read his entire sentence with the word covertly in it. Now, go look up the word covertly, and go face palm, because clubs don't give you marks covertly. They ask if you need a stamp to get back in. Now, if we did not know we were getting the stamp at the club, then it would have been done, COVERTLY. get it?

What?!?!?

The things are completely different, you are comparing apples to sea cucumbers. Marking your hand while visiting a prison is for your safety and the security of the prison, marking a tire is for traffic and parking control.
Marking a person in such a manner is setting them up to be tracked and arrested again before they can cause "trouble".

Your excuse that it is done to aid in administration and efficiency is exactly the reason that Nazis gave for marking the Jewish homes and clothing with a yellow Star of David.

Learn from history lest you repeat it.

1. You do NOT know what type of "ink" was used. The "victim's " description sounds NOTHING like UV ink used in Bars and Theme parks.

2.Unauthorized " marking" of citizens who are excercising their constitutional rights should be illegal, as it is profiling. They are not breaking any laws by protesting. Ask them and Im sure they will attest to their political stances, which is why they assemble publically. No need to "mark" them for later.

3. Im amazed at the sheep here. It's not about the ink.. it's about the illegal profiling of law abiding citizens.

No wonder this country is screwed.

Once the cops get really invested in using this technique, OWSers should go buy cans of "invisible" UV reactive spray paint and coat everything in the frikkin' park, including the officers.

LEO= Low Educational Occupation.

Now that is the way to combat the problem and totally nullify everything they are trying to attempt. Just cover everything in it and it will render the original purpose useless.

Then the police will have to go back to the drawing board to come up with something else.

This is how you stay one step ahead.
