This little article has been making the rounds so I thought I would share it here on ATS for those who are not in receipt of this rather viral email. My comments first. I doubt this is a true story but it is a good story with some food for thought for everyone in #OWS and all of you socialists out there that think that taking from one person by force and giving it to someone else is not theft.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

An economics professor at a local college made a statement that he had never failed a single student before, but had recently failed an entire class. That class had insisted that Obama's socialism worked and that no one would be poor and no one would be rich, a great equalizer.

The professor then said, "OK, we will have an experiment in this class on Obama's plan".. All grades will be averaged and everyone will receive the same grade so no one will fail and no one will receive an A.... (substituting grades for dollars - something closer to home and more readily understood by all).

After the first test, the grades were averaged and everyone got a B. The students who studied hard were upset and the students who studied little were happy. As the second test rolled around, the students who studied little had studied even less and the ones who studied hard decided they wanted a free ride too so they studied little.

The second test average was a D! No one was happy.
When the 3rd test rolled around, the average was an F.

As the tests proceeded, the scores never increased as bickering, blame and name-calling all resulted in hard feelings and no one would study for the benefit of anyone else.

To their great surprise, ALL FAILED and the professor told them that socialism would also ultimately fail because when the reward is great, the effort to succeed is great, but when government takes all the reward away, no one will try or want to succeed.
Could not be any simpler than that. (Please pass this on) and scroll down

These are possibly the 5 best sentences you'll ever read and all applicable to this experiment:

1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.

2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.

3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.

4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it!

5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that is the beginning of the end of any nation.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I guess it was the way I was raised in a military family and government worker family. My dad could never explain to me why government and military workers also pay taxes? Why would you have someone pay taxes that is already receiving tax payer money as their sole income source. It is like taking from one guy and giving another guy a job with that money and then taking some of that guys money and giving it to another person for welfare. It is like a monkey round and people catch on.

It took some years but the communist and socialist pretty much gave up on that and became more capitalist. Now we have Americans that want to go through that as well. It makes no freaking sense to me.

It is an old urban myth, but it makes a valid point. Most teachers are liberals and more than a little socialist in their beliefs, so it would be unlikely to happen "for real".

yes, I remember that one. my stepfather sent it to me via email along with his other dozen or so repulilcan propaganda per day.
I believe it's on Snopes as a hoax.
I don't understand why the GOP party is so set on Obama wanting to make this a socialist country.
It won't work.
We weren't made or born that way and won't ever accept it.
Likewise, it is a mistake to shove our democracy on other countries.
just my opinion...

Ayn Rand published Atlas Shrugged in 1957. In this seminal novel there is the iconic John Galt who vowed "to stop the motor of the world". He did this because of his experience with The Twentieth Century Motor Company, and company in which he worked for the founder of whom he admired and respected. However, when the founder died, his children inherited the company and decided to take the communist ideal and apply it as a business strategy. This section of Atlas Shrugged explains in great detail what your email you posted explained in a relatively shorter amount of time.

Atlas Shrugged is a novel well worth reading, and for those who have read it, and even those who are just now discovering it, most will realize just how prescient Rand was about the trajectory of the American economy. Our current economic crisis and the gross expansion of an intrusive government today in reality is so close to what Rand described in 1957 it is creepy cool, and altogether frightening.

Would that work? I think not. They do teach political science and history in schools last I checked. They also have political processes in many schools that the kids participate in. Why would you not want your kids to learn about politics? Just be certain that you teach them your values as well so they have an idea where you stand.

But that doesn't even describe socialism at all. Socialism is not some system where everyone is equal in that sense.

Socialism is simply the workers ownership, and control, of their own labour, through ownership, and control, of the means of production. It was created as an alternative to private ownership, capitalism. Capitalism exploits labour.

Liberalism doesn't equal socialism. Socialism is nothing to do with government, it is an economic system. It can be both statist, Marxism, or none-statist, anarchism...

"Anarchism is stateless socialism" Mikhail Bakunin.

The reason it is more fair, and people more equal, is because it is a system based on peoples needs, not the greed of private owners. A private owners best interest is to make as much profit as possible, and pay workers as little as they can get away with. The workers best interest is to make as much as possible from their labour.
Socialism is cooperative and workers earn directly from their labour. Under capitalism you have to produce more than you are paid for, in order for the 'private owner' to make a profit. For example in China they get paid about 6c to make a shirt that sells for $60 in the USA. Not all of that is profit obvioulsy, but I can guarantee it is far more than 6c.

I am all for people having what ever type of social contract they will agree to. So long as people agree on a contract to me it is valid unless someone is deliberately hurt everything is just fine.

In my business I have no employees. I have only business partners and they are all vested by labor or money or intellectual property or some other advantage they lend to the company for our mutual success.

This is a for profit company mind you but making a profit is not as important as being stable and paying our bills and making sure we all have some growing interest in the success of the business and all of our needs are met.

Do we all benefit equally no. We benefit based on our ownership in the company. We all own the company and its assets and its liabilities equal to our share in the company.

In a sense we are a kind of Libertarian commune and we are growing our abundance and security for mutual but scaled benefit. We all agree to our situation and are thriving on it in our own way. We provide for our mutual medical care by having partners in the medical business, we provide for our food security by working together to put some acres to work that would be sitting idle if not exploited by the partnership. We are making fuel for ourselves, and also we are buying and expanding our land holdings. Our need for government is minimal. We prefer our consensual relationships that work for our mutual benefit without need for even local government support. Every level of government exists to extract wealth from the productive like us so we to object to it.

Well Winston would say that wouldn't he? Winston was a centrist conservative. No one in his position is going to say anything different, because it is not in their best interest to support a system that would not benefit them.

He even admired Hitler, as most in the capitalist class did...

While all those formidable transformations were occurring in Europe, Corporal Hitler was fighting his long, wearing battle for the German heart. The story of that struggle cannot be read without admiration for the courage, the perseverance, and the vital force which enabled him to challenge, defy, conciliate, or overcome, all the authorities or resistance’s which barred his path. He, and the ever increasing legions who worked with him, certainly showed at this time, in their patriotic ardour and love of country, that there was nothing that they would not dare, no sacrifice of life, limb or liberty that they would not make themselves or inflict upon their opponents. Winston Churchill

You see fascism is the system of the elite. He even shared Hitlers distrust of Jews...

The part played in the creation of Bolshevism and in the actual bringing about of the Russian Revolution by these international and for the most part atheistic Jews ... is certainly a very great one; it probably outweighs all others. With the notable exception of Lenin, the majority of the leading figures are Jews. Moreover, the principal inspiration and driving power comes from Jewish leaders ... The same evil prominence was obtained by Jews in (Hungary and Germany, especially Bavaria).

Although in all these countries there are many non-Jews every whit as bad as the worst of the Jewish revolutionaries, the part played by the latter in proportion to their numbers in the population is astonishing. The fact that in many cases Jewish interests and Jewish places of worship are excepted by the Bolsheviks from their universal hostility has tended more and more to associate the Jewish race in Russia with the villainies which are now being perpetrated. Winston Churchill

The elite capitalists classes prior to WWII all mistrusted the Jews, Hitler was not unique in that aspect.

He also praised Mussolini, the creator of fascism...

I could not help being charmed, like so many other people have been, by Signor Mussolini’s gentle and simple bearing and by his calm, detached poise in spite of so many burdens and dangers. Secondly, anyone could see that he thought of nothing but the lasting good, as he understood it, of the Italian people, and that no lesser interest was of the slightest consequence to him. If I had been an Italian I am sure that I should have been whole-heartedly with you from the start to finish in your triumphant struggle against the bestial appetites and passions of Leninism. I will, however, say a word on an international aspect of fascism. Externally, your movement has rendered service to the whole world. The great fear which has always beset every democratic leader or a working class leader has been that of being undermined by someone more extreme than he. Italy has shown that there is a way of fighting the subversive forces which can rally the masses of the people, properly led, to value and wish to defend the honour and stability of civilised society. She has provided the necessary antidote to the Russian poison. Hereafter no great nation will be unprovided with an ultimate means of protection against the cancerous growth of Bolshevism. Winston Churchill

The capitalist elite always wanted a system like fascism, it was the inevitable result of it. 'The people' back then were much more aware of what the capitalist classes were really about, and thus more of a threat. Before we had TV to condition the population with, politics was talked about on the streets, and the working class was a real threat to the capitalist system. You only have to see what was happening in Europe during the 30's, especially Spain.

libcom.org...

The capitalist class got what it wanted, a world wide fascist system. It took WWII to take the power away from the working class in order for that to happen.
