Witnesses said a man had been chased by police in and out of shops before he fled into a butchers, grabbed a knife and attacked the officers.

Two of the PCs were seriously hurt and one suffered a broken hand during Saturday's incident in Kingsbury Road.

A 32-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.

www.bbc.co.uk...

Pretty mad stuff. Don't hear about such serious assaults on police in the UK. I hope this doesn't get blown out of proportion and is used as an excuse to arm police more heavily.

Also it seems the officers stab proof vest didn't help too much unless the knife went underneath it or something.

I have a lot of reasons to hate the police after suffering victimisation and wrongful arrest of me and my girlfriend when I was the one who had a glass smashed in my face just to mention one incident. But a lot of them are good people and some I have met while in custody treated me very well. I believe a lot of them are decent, good people who just have been conditioned to think that what they do is right. Don't hate them all and assume they are all the same.

Especially in the UK where it makes the police state in the US look like nothing. Plus they litterally have a plutocracy there which inevitably results in crime on both ends of the economic spectrum, that's just nature. Well anyway, if your gonna commit crimes, you better have balls, and it sounds like this guy had some bowling balls.

Edit- oh, and I don't hate all police, I am sure they believe in what they do, many are nice guys. I just think everything is nature and I look at it that way.

I can't help but think this is an interesting way to show anti-gun laws don't stop much. Take away the guns and knives work equally well for doing violent harm on others, right England? I hear knife violence over there is downright epidemic with street crime?

Wow, no flags for this puppy. If it had been the police that had done this there would be 20 flags by now. Just goes to show how dangerous their job is.

I flagged it, and edited my last post, before you posted that. And I would be one to flag posts about police violence too. Everyone is a reflection of the systems in nature.

With a gun though at least one officer would probably have died. Thing is a knife is a really up close and personal action so I think slightly less people are willing to do it compared with using a gun. Over here knives are the weapon of choice indeed, guns are used a lot more than we here about in the news, but knives are ridiculously common on the streets here. I have a friend (a girl) who used to carry a switchblade with her everywhere and she was arrested when her boyfriend got in a fight and she got a slap on the wrist. Had she been a a bloke she woulda probably faced prison time, but she said she was scared about getting raped and that was enough for her to get of with a caution. Pretty odd logic for them indeed considering laws on knives in this country, especially since switchblades are 100% illegal here, even to have in your home.

Er... no. In 2008, 1,900 people were murdered by knives in the US, compared with 250 in Britain. Factoring in the differences in population, you are still 1.5 times more likely to be murdered by a knife in the US, in addition to being 40 times more likely to be murdered by a firearm.

The argument that people will just murder with knives instead of guns is rather specious. Unless you're a circus performer, then you can't kill someone with a knife from any more than a couple of feet away.

I would never presume to suggest England change it's approach about guns. The lack of them works there, and that's good for how people there want it. I just thought it was interesting to note how the lack of them doesn't change outcomes much and people will still find a way to kill and rob each other.

It's as much an observation on the attitudes in the U.S. by some that removing guns here would somehow reduce crime in major ways....People would just change weapons. That's all.

It's true that other cultural factors contribute to the level of crime as well, but there's no statistical evidence to suggest that knife crime in Britain is in any way linked to the prohibition of most firearms.

As I've pointed out, the US has a higher level of knife murders than the UK, despite the fact that the US is a country with very high levels of personal gun ownership.

The simple fact of the matter is that it's easier for someone to attack another person with a gun, than it is to shank them with a knife. A gun is an impersonal way of attacking people, and even the most mild-mannered of people wouldn't find it too difficult to pull a trigger at a remote target. Whereas a lot of people would find it physically difficult to actually sink a blade in someone's flesh, right up close and personal.

Also, if you're attacked by a knife, then you've got a sporting chance of blocking the blow, disarming your assailant or escaping from him. If you're attacked by a gun, on the other hand, then all you can do is duck for cover and say a few prayers !
