State of Emergency Declared in Reno Wildfire

Officials said 20 homes have been lost, several people have suffered smoke inhalation and one person suffered a cardiac arrest in the fire, which started about 12:30 a.m. in the Caughlin Ranch area and glowed orange on the hillsides through the night.

Firefighters don't know what caused it.

Wow... this is nuts. Out of nowhere, hurricane-type winds pop up with eruptions of flames springing up everywhere. Fires are horrible and so are wind storms but this is just... plain... weird.

What could possibly have caused this? Is it simply a couple of strange phenomenons that just happened to have occurred at the same time?

Anybody have first or second-hand reports to pitch in?

The high winds didn't appear out of nowhere. They were predicted earlier in the week, and the National Weather Service issued warnings of the impending conditions. So that part of things wasn't unexpected.

As for the fire, the cause isn't currently known, but the area is no stranger to wildfires, and ironically, Autumn is one of the most dangerous seasons for fires due to the accumulation of dead, dry leaves and brush left over from the summer. The Caughlin Ranch area in particular is no stranger to fires or fire danger, and any communities located in pine-forested areas are often at risk of fires, as conifers can be very flammable even when relatively green and healthy.

The combination of extremely high winds and the fire have put large portions of Reno and surrounding communities at serious risk, and unfortunately the high wind warning will remain in effect until at least 4PM, and high winds may well continue into the night.

This is a very bad day for Reno and its people. Here's wishing them the best that can be hoped for under these horrid circumstances.

Outside of Reno they had the Train derailment earlier this year, then the gun attack in Carson City that killed many,THEN the plane crash at the Airshow.

Now fires... Tough year for Northern Nevada.

I wish they would have included that information in the reports. Even in some other reports, the witnesses speak as if they were surprised by it. I guess that's sensationalism reporting for you.

Understandably frustrating, and just another reason for applying the philosophy of skepticism to anything and everything, especially from news vendors.

Meanwhile, it's still a very bad situation in Reno, and while the winds rage on, getting any sort of control over the fire will be extremely difficult, if not flat out impossible. Thousands of people have already had to evacuate from their homes, many with almost no warning, at least twenty homes have already been lost, and if anyone hasn't been or isn't killed by this fire before it;s all over, it will be a genuine miracle.

It's a real mess, and will likely get much worse before it gets better.

The police force of reno is outstanding.The shorts they wear are funny.The tv show displays how hardworking they are.

lmao....Reno 911 is hilarious.....as for what's really going on with the wildfires....that sucks....a lot can burn up out there, real quick....not a whole lot new, for that part of the country
