As has been stated, the transportation of nuclear material is tightly watched and regulated. There was no leak, so the HAZMAT regulations on
quarantine are greatly reduced. There were escort vehicles ready to deal with the situation right there as well. Few companies will even haul
radioactive material. Trust me on this; I drove a truck OTR for eight years.
The single largest contributor to accidents is some silly four-wheeler in a rush and ticked off at the big evil truck blocking his/her path, and
Memphis is as bad as they come (well, except Chicago) for people doingm stupid things around semis. The next time you see a truck, please remember
this:
- The driver is probably a better dricer than you are; he's got a LOT of practice.
- That driver can see things ahead you can't; he is sitting higher up.
- He is probably in a bigger hurry than you are; he's got a lot farther to go.
- Your car may be agile, but his weighs as much as 40 tons (possibly more if permitted).
- He may have 4 1/2 times as many wheels to brake with, but he weighs 20 times a much as the heaviest SUV.
- He may have three times the horsepower, but again weighs 20 times as much as the heaviest SUV.
- He can move about as fast as any regular traffic, but changing that speed is slow... that includes turning, speeding up, or stopping.
- His truck is built out of steel shapes and contains a LOT of steel; your car is built of of thin sheet metal and will bend and crunch much
easier.
- You have no idea what (if anything) he is hauling.
If there is a conspiracy here, it is about people cutting trucks off, tailgating trucks, and in general being total idiots around a moving truck when
it should be blatantly obvious they are flirting with death and disaster to save 30 seconds.
