Really? I could not imagine the pain this poor man felt! This hippo was 2600 pounds! Well, I guess this is why they are called WILD ANIMALS! newsfeed.time.com...

It always amazes me when I see cases like this. When will people learn not to be so stupid?

It makes me wonder.... Who was keeping who as a pet? Was the human really keeping the Hippo or was the 'hungry hungry' Hippo just patronizing the silly human until he eventually wanted a people-snack?

We need a real simple test for Pet vs. Zoo Animal. If, outside of the pet relationship, the animal is fully capable of killing and eating you without any help or extraordinary effort? It's place is a zoo or the wild, not the family homestead. Indeed... A simple test for a simple question.

This reminds me of the whale that killed his 'friend' by dragging her under water by her ponytail.

Their play and our play isn't quite the same now is it.

I remember this guy too - sad thing that.

I hope they don't shoot the hippo cause the guy was irresponsible.

peace

Surprise,surprise!!

I think this says it all about the guy:

It was an unexpected bout of violence for the pair, as Els treated the hippo “like a son.” He said, “There’s a relationship between me and Humphrey and that’s what some people don’t understand.”

Personally, I suspect the Hippo got upset when he was grounded.

I misread the thread and was left wondering "why would anyone be keeping a hippie as a pet."

Even crocs and lions don't want to mess with hippos if they can avoid it. What a moron.

Maybe I can get a whale shark for the pool.

Peace

Yeah - I understand that hippos actually kill more people in Africa than lions, rhinos, etc...

Once they are grown hippos can also be highly territorial. This may have been a territorial reaction by the hippo. What amounts to "Hey - get out of my space!" between two hippos could very well be fatal between hippo and human.

People should know by now, that hungry hungry hippos may not have your best interest at heart... tsk, tsk, tsk.

Was he trying to out do those drug dealers who've replaced their pitbulls with hyenas ? Seriously though why would anyone want a pet hippo, imagine cleaning up after them.

Yep, exactly. Hippos might look cute (baby hippos especially), but they are more irascible than rhinos, and can be very, very dangerous.

Why ANYONE would want to keep a wild (read: non-domesticated) animal is beyond me. They are NOT pets...ever.

But I also agree that I hope they don't penalize the poor animal simply because its owner was STUPID.
