At the United Nations Economic and Social Council The Holy See is also an observer to the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), attending all of its meetings and it is able to make proposals and policy statements regarding of all issues that are of its concern.[12] Since 22 July 1977, the Holy See has had a standing invitation to attend the sessions of ECOSOC's regional commissions on an equal footing with those State Members of the United Nations who are not members of those regional commissions.[13] In addition, the Holy See enjoys full membership in some specialized agencies of the United Nations dependent on ECOSOC such as WIPO, ITU, and UPU. In order to follow the work of those ECOSOC subsidiary bodies and agencies that meet regularly in Geneva, the Holy See has established a Permanent Observer Mission in Geneva. [edit] At the United Nations Security Council Having observer status at the United Nations, the Holy See is also able to observe all open meetings of the United Nations Security Council. Occasionally, the Holy See has asked to, and has been allowed to made statements in public meetings of the Security Council. The Permanent Observer has spoken on the Iraq-Kuwait conflict,[14] on the regulation of armaments,[15] and on the protection of civilians during armed conflicts.[16] On some occasions, the Holy See has submitted documents to the Security Council, such as the April 29, 2003 statement of Patriarchs and Bishops of Iraq on religious freedom.[17]
"The Jesuits are a military organization, not a religious order. There chief is a general of an army, not the mere father abbot of a monastery. And the aim of this organization is: POWER. Power in its most despotic exercise. Absolute power, universal power, power to control the world by the volition of a single man. Jesuitism is the most absolute of despotisms: and at the same time the greatest and most enormous of abuses.... "The general of the Jesuits insists on being master, sovereign, over the sovereign. Wherever the Jesuits are admitted they will be masters, cost what it may. Their society is by nature dictatorial, and therefore it is the irreconcilable enemy of all constituted authority. Every act, every crime, however atrocious, is a meritorious work, if committed for the interest of the Society of the Jesuits, or by the order of the general." [Fifty Years In The Church Of Rome, Charles Chiniquy, 1968, reprinted from the 1886 edition, quoting Memorial Of The Captivity Of Napolean At St. Helena, General Montholon]

Ok, humour aside.
Apparently, the nickname was officially adopted in 1982, after a contest run by the Seattle-King County Convention and Visitors Bureau. Get this, the winner wasn't even a local! Hmph! Wikipedia proudly proclaims that "the name alludes to the lush evergreen trees in the surrounding area" and also notes, in a separate entry on the Emerald City, that "Washington State is also known as the 'Evergreen State'".
