Ok, so lets say TSHTF and its chaos, lawlessness, every man for themselves, apocalypse. Basic survival has kicked in. People dead and dieing everywhere and no military or national guard or police they have all gone home to try to look after their own.

So I will give you my hot tips, and you can give me yours!

1) How do you open doors quickly, that are locked, and still be able to shut the door after you enter?

If you break a window, then the zombies will get in. If you break a plate glass door to a mall, or store, you won't be able to shut it.

What you need to quickly enter a door, is one of these a cut off saw

All you need to do is cut off the dead bolt with a metal blade. It will go through it in 3 or 4 seconds.

If you cut through a dead bolt and find there is a bar behind the door, cut through the bar.

2)How do you start a locked car?
Screwdriver and mallet. Pound the screw driver into the lock, break it, turn the screw driver open the door, do the same in the sterring column. Works on boats too.

3)Carry an airhorn. Scares away things. Even a big man will lose his nerve if you keep blasting 120 decibals in his face.
Dogs will run.
I bought a rechargable one that has a built in pump today. It has a push in base plunger, that you pump that is part of the canister.
There isn't a picture of it on the net or I would show you.

There are others that come with a pump, but few that have a pump as part of the canister.

4)SO you have some information on video, but you have no TV or monitor. What do you do?

You should have got a projector camcorder from 3M instead because it will project the video onto a wall.

This one I can show you because I ordered one last night.

small HD camcorder with HD projector 200 bucks approx.

And finally number 5) What do you do if...

Can you take a library with you? Yes you can. On a 500 GB hardrive you can store who knows how many pdf files, and there are millions available on every subeject for free.
Google released a whole bunch of books that are not copyrighted, and also there are lots of books that are not copyrighted on the torrents You just have to search them out.

My favorite tip for starting fire is steel wool and a 9 volt battery. Wet, damp conditions; it doesn't matter.
Fire.
Cooks food
Sterilizes water
Provides light
Provides warmth
Keeps critters away
Signals other survivors
Cauterizes wounds

I'll post ya 3 for 3...not a terrible though.
...

1) food you'll die without it...and no matter how much you stock pile you will eventually run out. Same with water. learn to boil water, catch and clean (at least) fish, and gain a mild understanding of eddible plants ect in your area. I know all the edible herbs, and am learning to identify mushroom--all ready am an advid fisherlady! forget about making fire...almost everybody carries a lighter these days....

2) learn To load, unload, shoot, clean a shotgun. All though reluctant if shtf this tool will come in handy. wayyyy more effective than a blow horn not To mention if barder way being used it would be worth way more Than useless bar of gold.

3) Appropriate clothing, not saying we have to have a runway here but I live where it gets cold...I could also see a big coat being used as a means of lean to shelter or a hammock to get off ground..as well a when torn rope or bandages

....travel light and stay outta sight! (-:

The main one I suggest, that I don't see too much talk of around here:

Buy any kind of oil press. There is a lot of good cooking you can do with a bottle of quality oil! Depending on what is local to you, you can almost always find things to press for oil. If you end up with tons of extra time on your hands, you can even make fuel for a diesel engine!

Where I live, there are an insane amount of black walnuts all over the place every fall. With a good press, I'd have all the oil I could use.

This is the beast of all survival tools, JCB 4x site master. With the right attachments it can penetrate most places including armories and secure warehouses where the real survival goodies will be stored.. And probably run on "Walnut oil".. (good tip)

If your out in the wilderness and you manage to get a fire going, place some medium sized stones in the fire and leave them there for a few hours.

Before you try to get some sleep, dig a 1 foot deep trench the width and legnth of your body and place the hot stones in the trench. Place them equally apart. Cover the trench with the soil removed and lay on top of the soil. This will provide you with warmth for upto 8 hours. Especially good if it is winter. A very useful tip if you have limited shelter on a cold evening.

The most important thing you need is knowladge and experiance

you can have all the gear in the world but not knowing how to use it can be the differance between life and death

When i was in the forces and used to see American toops. We always used to say "All the gear no idea" Im not saying all US forces are the same but it was a running joke maybe we were a bit envious of the nice gear lol

map of your area and learn to read it, mark on it places of interest such as remote truck yard aka maybe some fuel/place to sleep for the night

first aid kit - cuts/bruises can slow you down and you dont need 5 years of medical school to wash out and bandage a cut

a few good knives as until they can make a shotgun cartridge that can skin/gut and joint an animal you'll need them probably more than a gun

Steel wool and a 9Volt battery??? You're a genius! I knew about steel wool, but didn't know that a battery is all you need to get it to glow.
Great tip.

Great tips! You know I was surfing a Chinese gadget shop the other day and I saw a fish finder for 40 bucks that can shoot right through the bottom of a boat. I thought well, if I am starving to death and need to catch fish, at least I will have a fish finder!
Its a little battery operated hand held thing. I have no idea if it works, but it says it does.

I told my roommate I found it online and was buying it and he says "What for??? You don't even have a boat!. I have a canoe and a power boat"

I said, mind yer own business and I will let you borrow it maybe.

sad thing is a bit of compassion has to be present for potential zombies as they were once like YOU, but may be sick or chemically changed somehow. really deep 1 is if possible build a moat around your living areas some how with acid fill within it this may be for extreme cases due to toxic effects.

Great tips.

I went shopping yesterday and bought a couple good knives and a combination pliers survival tool.
One of the knives is made to be thrown.
I decided to get that because I live in Canada and well getting a gun is like getting your engineering degree.

I went to the sporting goods store to get the combo tool on sale and wanted to get a slingshot. He said, oh no, we don't sell anyting like that here. No weapons you can fire at all. I saw a flare gun there for a boat though and said, what about that, it looks like you could put someone's eye out with that.
I don't think he felt comfortable letting me handle it even though it was still in the package.

Its 50 bucks, but you can get more shells. I think I will get one eventually and a couple spare boxes of shells.

I am not worried about a gun really because if the time comes I need one, then I will have to find one on some dead body. Around here most people don't have guns. So I think most people would assume there is no need to just shoot you as walk by. Since you probably aren't a threat to them.
I guess whoever has a gun here will get to be king.

You know there are moral and ethical considerations when you are dealing with zombies.

It would depend on what sort fo condition the person had. If for instance a person is carrying a higly contagious plague, and they are running at you, and you will get it and die if they come in contact with you, then you are by rights, in a self defense position.

During any apocalypse it comes down once again to survival of the fittest. If the zombies are not a threat, if they are just like animals, like deer, then why bother with them at all?

If you are out and about during the apocalypse and a dog has been feeding on contaminated flesh and just wants to scratch you by accident, or lick your child's face, again, that golden lab is using deadly force and you are in a self defense position. Even if it doesn't mean to harm you.

If you go on the offensive, then again, you might get some on you, whoever or whatever you decide to fight with.

Thats why I think self defense including running away, or scaring them away is a better alternative. Avoid confrontation.
I think that nature will look after its own, and most people will die. I don't believe in the dead coming back to life as zombies, but I think that people can become like zombies, when they are afflicted. And they could be big, and hungry, and dangerous, and maybe even incoherent, acting on instinct, unable to speak, highly agressive, and covered in disease.

They could in a panic just grab you as you came around a corner, and sream unggggh in your face and cover you with spit and they might be filthy and covered with sores, and smell to high heaven, maybe have some gangrene, and be trying to scratch your eyes out.

They might even come in droves if they see a light at night.

I don't think they could stay outside more than a day or two because whenever an army wants to lay siege they have to set up camp and feed themselves. The zombies would leave to find food if you hunker down.

But if ever during that time your life is threatened even by a stray dog that just wants to lick your face, then you will die like the rest if you do not protect yourself in a very serious manner.

First you need water. If you can't get that, then you will surely die.
You should know how to make a solar still.

Watch some videos on how to purify water
www.youtube.com...

If you find a muddy river and want fresher water, dig into a sandy riverbank until you dig down to water. The water will be muddy looking but will have been at least filtered through the sand. You must still use your water filter to filter it, but it might be better to use this water than to use water directly from the river. During plague times in Egypt, wells were dug along the banks of rivers to allow water to filter through the sand and purify it.

Never use stagnant water or water that appears to have mosquito larvae or a bad smell. However, if you see a lot of fish or turtles or frogs, that water may be more free of chemicals as some animals can live in it. But you shoule still filter it.

Filter and then BOIL your water if you are able to obtain a fire.

How to make a refrigerator using the ancient technique of using a terra cotta pot within a terra cotta pot. Called the flowerpot fridge, you can cool your food even in hot climates such as the desert. How do you think the ancient people did it? Here are two videos which show how this is done. If you have no food to cool, but just want to cool yourself, you could perhaps at least put your feet into one of these, which should cool you on a hot day without electricity. If you had large enough pots you could perhaps even get your lower body into one if you are an adult or a small child could squat inside to cool most of their body.

Make some plarn (plastic bag yarn) this can be knitted or crocheted or woven into mats or even into emergency clothing.

How to make felt. You need wool though. But if you have the wool, you can make felt. You don't need to know how to knit it or crochet it. Felt is used to keep Mongolians warm. It is used for clothing and tents.
This video shows how to make a small batch of felt.

Eat the weeds, lots of videos on edible plants and you to find and harvest and process them.

I hope any of this information is interesting and helpful but I hope I or you never have to actually use any of these methods.

There are also videos on making Cob houses and clay houses I find very interesting. These require a lot of energy and resources but are useful skills. One day we may all have to resort to living in more Primative structures such as earth domes, cob houses, etc.

Learning to construct a geodesic dome from PVC pipe, sticks, or whatever you have, is handy as this shape is very structuarally sound and can be used for green houses, tents, etc.

www.youtube.com...

Also, there are tons of videos on youtube on how to crochet or knit. I am learning myself and getting quite good at it. So at least I could be useful for making my own clothing if I could be supplied with wool, plastic yarn, or even recycle old t-shirts or old worn clothing into new yarn.

It is always useful to know how to make the things you will need. Of course I have no knowledge of metallurgy and many other skills such as mechanics, animal husbandry, farming, herbalist, etc. The more skills you have in a variety of areas, the more useful you can be.

I say learn as much as you can about many things, especially lost skills that were once invaluable, but that hardly anyone knows how to do anymore. Then you can be useful to a lot of people or at least you can bug out alone and keep yourself comfortable.

If you have a couple thousands of dollars to spend, it might not be bad to get yourself a tiny house. I have seen these tiny houses for sale that you can load on a trailer.

I can raise your chances of survival by 50 %, yes fifty percent!
You will either be killed or die eventually.
Seeing is how death is totally unavoidable, one of these two will happen.
Do not let yourself be killed!
It is simple as that, by removing this from the equation you have boosted your surviveability by fifty percent!
And I can probably bump up your chaces of survival past that.
Do not believe everything you read online.
If you see it, verify it then verify again.
Maybe even practicing could help a bit.
